Encyclopedic

[edit]

Hello, the content seems okay to me (more than that - well referenced), but the structure of the text is a little too journalistic. Encyclopedistically, there should be first a short introduction / definition, then blocks like "History" and "Scope" and "Explanations" or something like that. But I am more familiar with German Wikipedia indeed. :-) Ziko (talk) 18:20, 12 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's true, Ziko! I was a journalist for 15-ish years; it's hard for me to break out of that style. I would welcome help here if somebody wants to make this more like an encyclopedia article in style and tone. But if nobody does it, I will try to come back and do it myself, maybe next weekend :-) Thanks Sue Gardner (talk) 01:46, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please consider including a summary linking here in Human rights in post-invasion Iraq#The current state of human rights, Politics of Iraq#Issues, and Minority politics in Iraq#Assaults on minority Groups since 2003 et seq. (While you are at it, those sections seem to have very little about the status of women in post-invasion Iraq, which is reportedly extremely poor by both relative and absolute measures.) 70.58.13.84 (talk) 00:01, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

WRONG

[edit]

Those who were killed in Iraq, aren't Emos those were just a bunch of Gay people, which were called Emo in a wrong situation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.18.152.148 (talk) 14:29, 27 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Violence against men or just homophobic violence?

[edit]

This one has been controversial in its inclusion, as it does refer to events that happened explicitly to gay men, but it isn't for their gender that they were killed, but for their sexuality. There is currently no Wikipedia definition for 'Violence against men', but the 'Violence against women' article states "VAW... is gender-based, meaning that the acts of violence committed against women expressly because they are women, or as a result of patriarchal gender constructs." Changing 'women' for 'men in this paragraph, does the article qualify for inclusion? These men weren't killed "expressly because they are men", but there is an argument that patriarchal gender constructs caused this homophobic violence, as men are pressured to act a certain way within sexist societies. I would go further to say that, with the reference to their dress as emo, they were persecuted for dressing femininely, which would reinforce the patriarchal argument further. The question is, does the article qualify for inclusion in 'Violence against men', or is the category 'Homophobic violence' enough? --Drowninginlimbo (talk) 18:30, 17 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm really not sure why there is debate on this. Only men were targeted, and they were targeted because they were behaving and dressing in ways outside of the male norm in Iraq. Thus, they were targeted because of their gender, because they violated gender norms, and because of a form of homophobia. I'm just quite confused why you think this isn't violence against men. Lesbians weren't targeted.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 23:20, 23 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Further, this article from a women's rights NGO has a whole section on what they call gender-based violence against men. I quote: "Crimes committed as part of the Islamist campaign of "sexual cleansing" are a form of gender–based torture: they are gender–based because they seek to enforce prescribed social roles for men and women; and they constitute torture because state authorities have acquiesced to and participated in the violence." It's quite possible that many of the Emos targeted in Iraq weren't gay at all, but just didn't fulfill the current societal role expected of men. Violence against men, including sexual violence - in wartime (besides the obvious violence of combat) is a major issue, and more and more sources are covering this.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 02:41, 24 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
LGBT tags should be removed imo. Yes homosexuals are being targeted and persecuted in Iraq, but these incidents had nothing to do with homosexuality, the attacks were aimed at individuals, usually teenager, who behaved and dressed in a manner perceived as nonconformist by local standards.--Kathovo talk 12:21, 24 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Disagree that LGBT tags should be removed. Article regularly mentions that one of the reasons behind the assaults were the perception that they may be homosexuality and it was largely reported and written on as such. Unless you have some new research from Iraq I think we should leave it as it is --Drowninginlimbo (talk) 00:37, 26 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Also @Obiwankenobi: I'm convinced for the articles inclusion in Violence against men, this does seem to be just as much tied to the perceived gender roles men have to live under as to their sexuality, and should most likely stay in the Violence against men category --Drowninginlimbo (talk) 00:33, 26 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
seems like we have consensus at least between us. I agree the LGBT violence cats should remain, this was clearly caught up in that and RS agree.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 01:33, 26 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I think this is probably consensus enough to leave both categories in --Drowninginlimbo (talk) 01:42, 26 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Unrelated Image?

[edit]

In the background section of the article there is an image in the sidebar that appears to be a screenshot of the video game Quake III. The image is accompanied by the caption "The game that emos probably played." To my knowledge there is no mention of Quake III or video games at all in the article, is this image supposed to be there?  Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.135.103.225 (talk) 09:37, 18 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

The result of the move request was: moved. Limited participation (WP:RMNOMIN) and no opposes. Emo is not a proper noun (I believe Bensci54 meant 2012 instead of 2013?) (non-admin closure) Z E T A3 18:23, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Emo killings in Iraq2012 Emo killings in Iraq – Doesn't seem to qualify for WP:NOYEAR because the name of the page isn't readily identifiable. This topic isn't very well known and media coverage on the killings have almost completely ceased after 2012. That improves its candidacy for a year in the title according to WP:NCWWW. MountainJew6150 (talk) 15:53, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest instead 2013 emo killings in Iraq as emo is not a proper noun. Bensci54 (talk) 17:34, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi - thanks for the updates. A few remaining things - I still can't find a source in there for the Iraqis saying six deaths, and there is still a failed verifications tag at the end of the first, somewhat confusing sentence in Aftermath. As a side note, I don't see confirmation anywhere that the BBC interviewed 17 gay men and policemen (PS what exactly does that mean)?
Thanks for bearing with me, @OpalYosutebito:, and I look forward to getting this one approved. Jishara (talk) 01:09, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Okay. I will be sure to check back tomorrow. It's getting late in my area... - OpalYosutebitotalk』 『articles I want to eat01:12, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Jishara I don't know how the sentence starting with As a result of the emo killings is not verified. Pages 19 and 20 of the PDF say In March 2012, IGLHRC learned of a new wave of "Emo" killing, which created fear and anxiety among LGBT community in Iraq. In response, IGLHRC joined Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International to condemn the violence, and to ask Iraqi authorities to investigate those murders and Affairs responded to IGLHRC's letter, indicating that based on the situation on the ground and our communications, "the Dutch asylum policy towards LGBT Iraqis has been expanded." - OpalYosutebitotalk』 『articles I want to eat15:24, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@OpalYosutebito: This is a tiny bit nitpicky, but would you mind adding stated to the thing about asylum policy, cause it seems to just be the Dutch ministry saying it and not IGLHRC observing it? Once that's done and you remove the failed verif tag, only things will be the six deaths and the 17 interviewees. Jishara (talk) 15:32, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
 Done; I'm going to take a break for a moment - OpalYosutebitotalk』 『articles I want to eat15:49, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Great! Also, for clarity, that sentence doesn't mention what the groups joined to do. when you get a chance ofc, just ping me. no rush. Jishara (talk) 16:00, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose, spelling, grammar, and understandability): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
Follows the Manual of style in all relevant cases. Reasonably well-written - errors I spotted I also fixed, but please check back through to confirm no small errors (the type of things included are such as "affect" vs "effect", etc).
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable, as shown by a source spot-check.
a (reference section): b (inline citations to reliable sources): c (OR): d (copyvio and plagiarism):
Firstly, there are two failed verification tags in the article, which of course block this from promotion. Secondly, a spotcheck turned up several sources that didn't say what they were cited for, for example - Cite 3 is used to say that gay men say the killings haven't abated but the source actually just says the killings are ongoing not accrediting that to anyone. 1 is used to cite a large block and is missing many of the details, for example the number 6. 5 doesn't discuss emo as being popular in other Arab nations. 9 never mentions the invasion. 2 doesn't mention the Human Rights Watch where it's used earloier on, and at a spot later where it's used it appears to be conflating two separate letters - one addressed to a bunch of gay men, and one addressed to emo youth listing that whole set of things listed there. Of course, this is not a comprehensive list of all the errors here - please check through it all to confirm. This is the biggest holdback.
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
Covers all the important aspects without straying.
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
Definitely neutral and manages to do it very well considering this disputed issue.
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
Stability is met - there are some vandalizing in the history but all was pretty immediately fixed.
  6. It is illustrated by images and other media, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free content have non-free use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
No images present so currently no problems. Would recommend an image of emo fashion somewhere, as it would help to explain what's going on - tho not necessary.
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:

  • Article long enough and promoted to "GA" status on July 13. The hook is interesting and drew my attention. However, the sourcing is problematic. There is confusion of sources about gay killngs and emo killings. The BBC source cited in the article for the minimum number of 12 emo youths killed (here) says no such thing and doesn't even appear to be on the topic of emo killings (but rather about persecution of gays). The al-arabiya source cited in the article (here) says there were "at least 90" (not 15) youths with emo appearances killed. Also, the article say they were killed for having "emo" appearances not for being part of an emo "community". (A teenager with an "emo" appearance may or may not be part of an emo community.) Also, the hook fact about at least "15 teenagers" being killed for being part of the emo community is also not contained in the article. This needs some significant cleanup before it could be featured on the main page. Also, the QPQ is not complete. Cbl62 (talk) 22:45, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • should I reword the hook to match the sources, then? - OpalYosutebitotalk』 『articles I want to eat04:15, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the hook needs to accurately reflect what the sources say, and the hook fact needs to be in the article. The article also needs to be gone over to make sure you using good sources that discuss "emo" killings/harassment rather than anti-homosexual conduct, as was the case with the BBC source. Cbl62 (talk) 11:06, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have tried to correct the lede as it was incorrect and misleading. I think this should return for a GA review. @Jishara: Victuallers (talk) 14:51, 15 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've nominated it for merging, since I don't think that its not notable. Noting this since it's probably important for a page to exist before running on the home page. HerrHeulsuse (talk) 06:51, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
