Roopa Basu is a British artist and designer based in London.[2] Her practice spans fine art, digital media, print design, and community health installations.
Early life and education
[edit]Basu was born to Ashim Basu, a marine engineer and Subha Basu, the former Queen Regnant of the House of Dar. Basu grew up living across three continents, including the United Kingdom, India, and the United States. In 1998, she attended the Brevard Music Center in the United States on a music scholarship for concert piano. She went on to study architecture and graphic arts at Philadelphia University before completing a course in Visual Communication at the London College of Communication (University of the Arts London) in 2009. She is married to Indika Rajapaksha.[3]
Career
[edit]Basu operates a boutique print design studio, Roopadesigns,[4] based in Battersea, London.[5] Her artistic output combines traditional fine art techniques with digital illustration and mixed media.[6]
In 2012, after the London riot, Basu organised the "I Art This" community mural painting event after her design studio at Lavender Hill was attacked.[7] She had been commissioned by the council to design the murals.[8] Basu has led multiple public community art initiatives in London. In 2023, she created public artwork for the London Borough of Wandsworth's "Shop Local" campaign.[5] She served as curator and lead artist for the Emerge! exhibition in partnership with the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability.[9][10][11] Basu was also selected for the "Culturally Mindful" residency initiative supported by the Mayor of London's Borough of Culture program.[12] Basu led three sessions of workshops at Mushkil Aasaan and Tooting Community Garden.[13] Her artwork has been featured internationally, including inclusion in the British Art exhibition at Gallery Kobun in Tokyo, Japan in April 2023. Basu created Flight of Voices, a community art installation that was exhibited in the Grand Hall at Battersea Arts Centre.[14] Additionally, Basu serves on the Creative Industries Employer Advisory Panel for South Thames College.[citation needed]
Basu launched Saree Stories: Making Mini Sarees & Unfolding Their Stories, a participatory project for South Asian Heritage Month Supported by a Wandsworth Heritage Grant.[15][16]
