Pygmalion Dadakaridis (Greek: Πυγμαλίων Δαδακαρίδης; born 30 May 1977) is a Greek actor of theatre, film and television. He won the Hellenic Film Academy Iris Award for Best Leading Actor at the 2021 ceremony for his performance in Angelos Frantzis's Eftyhia (2019).[1] On television, he starred as the criminologist Dimitris Lainis in the Cosmote TV mystery series Eteros Ego (2019–2021), a role that made him widely recognisable to Greek audiences,[2][3] and has appeared in leading roles across several long-running Greek prime-time series. He has also worked as a theatre director, staging and starring in the Greek premiere of Samuel D. Hunter's The Whale in 2024.[4][2]
Early life
[edit]Dadakaridis was born in Manchester on 30 May 1977 to a Greek father and an English mother; his family later moved to Bolton in Greater Manchester. He initially studied computing and marketing in England before turning to acting.[3] After moving to Greece in 1996, he trained at the Themelio drama school of Nikos Vastardis in Athens, graduating in 1999.[5][3]
Career

[edit]Dadakaridis made his professional stage debut in 1999–2000 in a production of August Strindberg's The Ghost Sonata, and has since appeared in a range of ancient, classical and contemporary works.[5] From 2009 to 2011 he performed in the touring production Zygos with the theatre group Agamoi Thytai.[5] In summer 2021 he took part in Iphigenia in Tauris, which toured across Greece.[5] In 2022 he co-directed with Sotiris Tsafoulias the Greek staging of Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt's Enigmatic Variations at the Neos Akadimos theatre in Athens, playing one of the two leads opposite Yiannis Bezos.[2]
In 2024 Dadakaridis directed and starred in the Greek premiere of Samuel D. Hunter's The Whale at the Neos Akadimos theatre, playing Charlie, a role for which he underwent a substantial physical transformation. The production received wide press attention.[4][6][7]
Television
[edit]Dadakaridis's television career began in the early 2000s with roles in the ALPHA series Oi istories tou astynomou Beka, in which he played Petros Athanasiou, and the Mega comedy Pentida-Pentida (Fifty Fifty) as Kimon Sarantinos.[5] He starred as a lead in the ANT1 series Klemmeni Zoi (2007–2008), Paris and Eleni (2008–2009) and the Mega comedy I Oikogeneia Vlaptei (2009–2010) with Chryssa Ropa.[3] From 2012 to 2014 he appeared in Me ta pantelonia kato.[3]
From 2019 to 2021, Dadakaridis played the lead role of the criminologist Dimitris Lainis in Eteros Ego: Hamenes Psyches, a mystery series produced for Cosmote TV and directed by Sotiris Tsafoulias. Reviewing the series, Marie Claire Greece described it as "a high-quality television series with artistic ambition."[2] In 2020–2021 he starred as Yannis Armaousis in the ANT1 comedy series I Familia opposite Ioanna Asimakopoulou.[5] More recently, he played the district attorney Christos Giakovakis in the Alpha drama Sasmos from late 2023,[8][9] and Kosmas Kotrotsis in the series Psychokores.[3]
Film
[edit]Dadakaridis made his film debut in Kyriakos Katzourakis's Lioumbi (2005).[5] His performance as Giorgos Papagiannopoulos in Angelos Frantzis's biographical drama Eftyhia (2019), a film about the songwriter Eftychia Papagiannopoulou starring Karyofyllia Karabeti and Katia Goulioni,[10] won him the Hellenic Film Academy Iris Award for Best Leading Actor at the 2021 ceremony.[1] He was subsequently cast in Bells, the first Greek-set feature by director Adam Christian Clark.[11]
