Primisuchus is an extinct genus of leptosuchomorph phytosaur from the early to mid Norian Upper Maleri Formation of India's Pranhita–Godavari Basin.
History and naming
[edit]The fossil remains of Primisuchus, namely the incomplete holotype skull, were recovered by the late Tharavat S. Kutty and subsequently housed at the Geology Museum of the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. The specimen was recovered from the early to mid Norian sediments of the Upper Maleri Formation, located in the Pranhita–Godavari Basin in central India.[1]
The name Primisuchus alludes to the fact that the taxon is the first described leptosuchomorph from India, combining the Latin "primis" with the word "suchus", itself derived from the Egyptian deity Sobek. The species name was chosen in honor of David Gillette for his contributions to Indian vertebrate paleontology.[1]
Phylogeny
[edit]Phylogenetic analyses suggest that Primisuchus was a late-diverging member of the clade Leptosuchomorpha within Phytosauria, sitting just outside of the clade Mystriosuchini.[1]
