Pierre Venter is a South African–New Zealand scientist and academic. He was appointed vice-chancellor of Massey University with effect from 2 February 2026.[1][2]
Education
[edit]Venter studied at the University of the Free State, graduating with a BSc, a BSc (Hons) in microbiology, and he holds a PhD in microbiology.[1]
Career
[edit]Venter worked in academia in South Africa before moving into research leadership roles in New Zealand's dairy sector fo Fonterra.[1] During his time at Fonterra he became director of Research and Development looking after a portfolio focused on food safety, quality science and product innovation.[3]
Vice-chancellor of Massey University
[edit]On 21 October 2025, Massey University announced that Venter' appointment as its next vice-chancellor. His started the VC role on 2 February 2026.[1][2]
Honours and recognition
[edit]In 2024, Venter received the Significant Contribution to Food Safety Award from the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology.[4][5]
