The nuclear island (or reactor island) is the heart of a nuclear power station. It contains the nuclear reactor core, reactor pressure vessel, containment building, cooling systems, nuclear reactor safety system and steam raising systems that deliver high pressure steam to the conventional island.[1]

The essential parts of the nuclear island are the containment building which houses:[2]

The containment building sits on the nuclear island basemat. Seismic isolators may be used between the basemat and containment building to increase seismic safety.[3]
