"Might Love Myself" is a song by American rock band Beartooth. It was released on July 21, 2023, as the third single from their fifth studio album, The Surface. The song peaked at number one on the US Mainstream Rock chart, becoming the band's first number-one hit on the chart.
Background and release
[edit]According to frontman Caleb Shomo, The Surface tells the story of his decision to pursue "a healthier relationship" with himself rather than continue "down a path of self-destruction".[1] He said "Might Love Myself" is about the first moment he realized that something was "significantly shifting" in his life.[2] Shomo said the song is about self-love, which he described as a choice rather than an emotion.[3][4] He said he had previously believed he would never experience self-love, explaining that self-deprecation and self-hatred had been among his greatest personal struggles. Shomo added that he wrote the song while the changes it describes were taking place.[5] He said releasing "Might Love Myself" was "terrifying" because it was much happier than Beartooth's previous material.[6] Shomo said he had been listening to music by Ariana Grande while writing "Might Love Myself", describing her songs as "super-empowering". He recalled that after listening to one of her albums while walking to get coffee, the song's lyrics and melody came to him when he returned to his studio.[7] Discussing the song, Shomo said he was trying to express what he was feeling "without being so cryptic", adding that earlier Beartooth material had been "pretty cryptic".[8]
The song premiered on SiriusXM's Octane one day before its official release.[9] It was released as the third single from The Surface, following "Riptide" and "Sunshine!".[10]
Composition and lyrics
[edit]Consequence described the song as having a strong pop influence, melodic vocals, and a screamed bridge.[11] Riff Magazine said it has a "slick guitar riff" with a "tight groove".[12] Distorted Sound wrote that the song's production gives it a softer sound than the album's previous singles while retaining a heavy metal breakdown.[13] Sputnikmusic wrote that "Might Love Myself" paired melodic hooks with soaring instrumentation.[14]
Discussing the lyric "still hate who I became", Shomo said he still felt that way at times but was trying to accept his past as part of his personal journey.[6]
Reception
[edit]Metal Hammer described the song as "effervescent".[15] Sputnikmusic contrasted "Might Love Myself" with Beartooth's earlier, darker material, calling it a "feel-good anthem",[14] while AllMusic called it a "fist-pumping anthem".[16] Blabbermouth.net described the song as having an "anthemic" late-1990s rock quality and as offering something new from Beartooth.[17] Upset characterized the song as "sun-soaked" radio rock.[18]
