Michel A. Khalaf (born 1964)[1] is a Lebanese-American business executive. He has been the president and CEO of MetLife since May 2019. Prior to becoming CEO, he held senior executive positions at MetLife, and before that spent 21 years at Alico, which MetLife acquired in 2010.
Early life and education
[edit]He is the son of Abbas Khalaf, who was Lebanon's Minister of Economy and Trade. His sister is Roula Khalaf, who has been editor-in-chief of the Financial Times.[2]
Khalaf was educated at the International College, Beirut.[3] He moved to the U.S. for university, and at Syracuse University obtained an MBA in finance.[2]
Career
[edit]He initially spent 21 years at Alico, eventually holding leadership roles in various markets including the Caribbean, France, Italy, Egypt, Poland, Romania, and the Philippines.[4] Upon MetLife's acquisition of Alico in 2010, he joined MetLife.[5] In 2017, his positions at the company were expanded to president of U.S. Business and EMEA.[1][6] In this role, he oversaw the group benefits and retirement services.[5]
On May 1, 2019, Khalaf succeeded Steven Kandarian as MetLife's CEO[5] and president.[4] As CEO, he introduced a five-year plan that year called Next Horizon, with the goal of meeting certain financial benchmarks.[7]
In 2024 he introduced a five-year business plan called New Frontier, to boost long-term growth.[8]
Board memberships
[edit]In addition to being the firm's president and CEO, Khalaf is on the board of directors of MetLife.[9] He serves on the board of the Geneva Association.[10] He is a member of the Business Roundtable[11] and The Business Council.[12]
Personal life
[edit]Khalaf is married to Andrea Khalaf, and they are based in New York City.[13]
