Ghush.site (Bengali: ঘুষ.সাইট) is a Bangladeshi online platform where users can anonymously report alleged demands for bribes in public services. It was launched on 21 August 2026 by Shahed Sharif Ahmed and Saif Kabeer.[1] Reports are reviewed before publication but are not independently verified.[2]

Background

[edit]

The idea for Ghush.site arose from Shahed Sharif Ahmed's experience while trying to collect money payable to his family after his mother's death. According to reports, he was allegedly asked for a bribe during the process. He then built the website so that others could report similar experiences with public services.[1][3]

Shahed, who was 17 at the time, developed the initial version with Saif Kabeer. Daily Prothom Alo reported that the development cost was about Tk 10,000.[1] The number of submissions rose quickly after the launch, attracting coverage from several Bangladeshi news organisations.[4]

Operation

[edit]

The submission form records the government office involved, the service sought, the location, the amount allegedly demanded and whether it was paid.[5] Users do not need an account or to disclose their identity. A moderation team reviews submissions before publication, and the names of accused officials are not published.[4][1]

The founders have said that the site aims to document patterns in alleged bribery rather than investigate individual cases. They have also said that it is not intended to replace investigations by government authorities or the Anti-Corruption Commission.[2][4]

Submissions

[edit]

Prothom Alo reported 804 submissions involving alleged demands of Tk 13.65 crore in the first two days.[6] Daily Country Today reported the same figure, with 430 reports from Dhaka and 167 from Chattogram.[5] Dhaka Tribunereported 2,709 submissions involving Tk 35.17 crore within three days,[7] while Daily Sun reported 4,361 submissions involving Tk 79.66 crore after four days.[4]

By the end of August, Prothom Alo reported 9,665 submissions.[1] Bangla Tribune reported more than 10,000 submissions involving alleged bribe demands exceeding Tk 330 crore around the same period.[8] Khaborer Kagoj reported 10,167 reports between 21 and 31 August, involving about Tk 334.93 crore and covering all eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh.[9]

By 10 September, The Daily Star reported 18,812 submissions involving alleged bribe demands totalling Tk 551.12 crore. More than 4,000 concerned land-related services, 1,365 involved the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, and 422 concerned taxation, involving about Tk 33.85 crore in alleged demands. About 70 percent of those submitting reports said they had paid the alleged bribe. Dhaka accounted for about 53 percent of the total reported amount.[2]

The figures are based on anonymous submissions and represent allegations rather than independently established cases of bribery.[6][2]

Reactions

[edit]

After reports about Shahed's own case were published, the primary education office in Mymensingh formed a three-member committee to investigate allegations involving officials.[10] Two employees of the office were issued show-cause notices.[11][12]

Prothom Alo reported that the Prime Minister's Office inquired about Shahed and his initiative, and that the administrator of Mymensingh City Corporation met him and expressed support.[10] Dhaka Post reported that the administrator assured Shahed of cooperation.[13]

An editorial published by The Daily Best News later referred to the reported figure of about Tk 552 crore as an indication of the scale of alleged informal payments reported through the platform.[14]
