How on earth do events work?

I’m getting increasingly more confused, and as most of the confusion came from here, I’m putting it here. Can someone:

1. Explain to me, and
2. Explain to the readers of this page? Thanks!

The Event: namespace is a namespace provided by the CampaignEvents extension (see Help:Extension:CampaignEvents on MediaWiki). To my knowledge, it adds the Event Registration tool, which allows Event coordinators to create "outreach events" (used for teaching editing and things like editathons) which users can register for and get emailed about.
