zepp.solutions is a Dutch technology company based in Delft that develops and manufactures integrated hydrogen fuel cell systems. Its systems are used in applications including heavy-duty road transport, construction equipment, shipping, port equipment and stationary power generation.[1]

The company was founded in 2017 by Jan Bot, Jonas Brendelberger, Remco Duba, Joost Kortleve and Kevin Schreiber. Before founding the company, the five founders had been involved with the Forze Hydrogen Racing team at Delft University of Technology, where they worked on hydrogen-electric racing cars and fuel cell systems.[2][3]

History

[edit]

Founding and early projects

[edit]

From 2012, the future founders of zepp.solutions were part of the technical team of Forze Hydrogen Racing. They established zepp.solutions in March 2017 at the Buccaneer Delft innovation centre.[4]

One of the company's first major projects was the development of a hydrogen-electric yard tractor with Terberg. Zepp.solutions developed the fuel cell system and parts of the powertrain. In October 2020, United Waalhaven Terminals began field testing the YT203-H2 at the Port of Rotterdam.[5]

Zepp.solutions also participated in the SWIM consortium to develop a hydrogen-electric water taxi for Rotterdam. The company supplied the fuel cell system for the twelve-passenger MSTX 22. The vessel was christened in Rotterdam on 30 August 2022 and subsequently presented to the public during the city's World Port Days.[6][7]

The company supplied a fuel cell module for Ab Initio, a training vessel operated by the Rotterdam-based STC Group. The vessel combines batteries, solar panels and a hydrogen fuel cell system and entered service in 2022.[8]

Heavy-duty fuel cell systems and vehicles

[edit]

In September 2022, zepp.solutions presented the X150 at IAA Transportation in Hanover. The modular fuel cell system is intended for heavy-duty applications and provides up to 150 kW of continuous net output power. Multiple units can be connected in parallel for applications requiring higher power output.[9]

In early 2023, two Liebherr 916 Litronic excavators operated by Dutch contractor Jos Scholman were presented after being converted by Terberg Techniek from diesel to hydrogen-electric drivetrains. The machines used Y50 fuel cell systems and hydrogen storage systems supplied by zepp.solutions.[10]

In September 2024, zepp.solutions presented Europa, a hydrogen-electric tractor unit for heavy-duty road transport, at IAA Transportation in Hanover. The vehicle displayed at the exhibition was based on a Mercedes-Benz Actros chassis and used the company's X150 fuel cell system and hydrogen storage system.[11] The truck was developed as part of the DREAMH2AUL project, which included logistics company Vos Transport Group.[12] In 2026, Vos Transport Group began using a Europa truck in its regular logistics operations.[13]

Production and financing

[edit]

In 2023, zepp.solutions was awarded approximately €1.98 million from the European Just Transition Fund for the development of production facilities in the Rotterdam region. The project was intended to increase production capacity for its fuel cell systems.[14]

In May 2024, the company raised €3 million in external capital from the Rotterdam Energy Transition Fund and a private investor. It was the company's first external equity investment.[15]

In June 2024, zepp.solutions received the Nieuwe Heldenprijs, an entrepreneurship award for young companies in the Rotterdam metropolitan region. The winner was selected by an audience vote following presentations by the three nominated companies.[16]

Aviation, maritime and stationary power applications

[edit]

In 2024, a hydrogen-powered ground power unit was tested at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The unit supplies electricity to aircraft while they are on the ground and was developed by zepp.solutions and Austrian manufacturer Dynell as part of the European TULIPS project. KLM and KLM Equipment Services participated in the field trial.[17]

In December 2024, the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) entered into an agreement with zepp.solutions to develop a fuel cell system for a modified Pipistrel Velis Electro. The project forms part of research into electric aviation using liquid hydrogen as an energy carrier.[18]

In 2025, zepp.solutions was selected to supply fuel cell systems for NERA-H2, a project to introduce hydrogen-electric propulsion to river cruise vessels. The system uses multiple X150 modules.[19]

In 2025, the company introduced a range of containerised hydrogen-electric generator sets under the zepp.generator name. Depending on the configuration, the systems provide between 150 and 600 kW of continuous electrical output.[20]

One of the first operational applications was a hydrogen generator set supplied to Dutch hydraulic engineering contractor Van den Herik-Sliedrecht. The generator is used to charge the batteries of the electric wire crane vessel Prins ZEs, formerly Prins 6. The vessel has approximately 2 MWh of battery capacity and is used for activities including dredging and waterway maintenance. In 2025, the Dutch infrastructure agency Rijkswaterstaat described Prins ZEs as the Netherlands' first fully emission-free wire crane vessel.[21][22]

In 2026, an X150 fuel cell system was integrated into a Konecranes Noell straddle carrier. The vehicle was subsequently deployed for field testing at Hamburger Hafen und Logistik's Container Terminal Tollerort in Hamburg.[23]

Products

[edit]

Fuel cell systems

[edit]

Zepp.solutions' main modular fuel cell systems are the Y50 and X150. Both are proton-exchange membrane fuel cell systems integrating the fuel cell stack, controls, thermal management and power electronics into a single module. The Y50 provides up to 55 kW of continuous net output power. The X150 provides up to 150 kW of continuous net output power and multiple modules can be operated in parallel for higher-power applications.[24][25]

Europa

[edit]

The zepp.europa is a hydrogen-electric tractor unit for heavy-duty road transport based on a Mercedes-Benz Actros chassis. Its powertrain combines an X150 fuel cell system, a high-voltage battery and a hydrogen storage system. The vehicle was publicly presented at IAA Transportation in Hanover in September 2024.[26]

Generator sets

[edit]

Under the zepp.generator name, the company produces containerised hydrogen-electric generator sets. The range is based on one or more X150 fuel cell systems combined with a battery and includes configurations providing between 150 and 600 kW of continuous power.[27]
