From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yuri Surtadi Mansury (born 1965) is an Indonesian-American regional scientist and professor of social sciences. He is a professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois. His research interests include regional and urban development, economic development, computational social science, and the spatial dimensions of social and environmental issues.[1]

Education

[edit]

Mansury earned a Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Indonesia. He subsequently attended Cornell University, where he received a master's degree and a Ph.D. in regional science.[1]

Academic career

[edit]

After completing his Ph.D., Mansury held a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Government at Harvard University and was affiliated with the Harvard-MIT Data Center from 2001 to 2002.[1] His research during this period included computational modeling of biological systems. He was a co-author of a 2002 study that developed an agent-based spatial model of brain-tumor growth and invasion.[2]

From 2002 to 2004, Mansury held a postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Health Sciences and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[1] During this period, he conducted research involving agent-based models of tumor systems in collaboration with Thomas S. Deisboeck and other researchers. A subsequent publication described the use of an agent-based tumor model to examine relationships between tumor growth and invasion.[3]

In 2006, Mansury joined the KDI School of Public Policy and Management in Seoul, South Korea. He was promoted to associate professor in 2007. A KDI School faculty directory lists his area of expertise as regional and urban economic development.[4]

Mansury has also held teaching positions in the Department of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University.[1]

Mansury later joined the faculty of the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he became a professor of social sciences. At Illinois Tech, he teaches courses including regional economic impact analysis, urban planning analysis, social science research methods, and computational social science.[1] His research uses agent-based modeling, neural networks, and structural equation modeling to study regional and urban phenomena.[1]

In 2021, Mansury became a board member of the Western Regional Science Association.[1]

Research

[edit]

Mansury's research focuses on regional and urban economic development and computational approaches to social science. His work has addressed economic development, spatial inequality, technology and innovation, disaster impacts, extreme weather, gender income inequality, and sustainable urban transportation.[1]

One strand of his research examines regional economic development in Indonesia. With Wook Sohn, he studied the relationship between financial activities, productivity, and regional economic growth using provincial panel data from Indonesia.[5]

Mansury has also applied structural path analysis to the economic effects of extreme weather. His 2021 study with D. K. Yoon and Xinyue Ye examined the economic effects of Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy using structural path analysis.

In research published in the International Regional Science Review, Mansury, Woosung Kim, and Jingwen Li examined the relationships among militarized conflict, trade, and economic development using a structural equation model incorporating spatial considerations.[6]

Research in Indonesia

[edit]

In 2024, Mansury received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar award for research in Indonesia. His project, Transforming Slash-and-Burn Practices to Sustainable Farming in Central and East Java, examined how attitudes, peer influences, and poverty affect farming practices in forest communities in Java.[7]

The project was conducted in collaboration with Universitas Pertamina and field representatives of the Pertamina Foundation. The research focused on villages in Blora, Central Java, and Ngawi, East Java, and investigated possible alternatives to slash-and-burn farming and their potential economic effects on local communities.[8]

The research combined fieldwork with an agent-based approach to study the factors influencing agricultural practices and the adoption of sustainable alternatives.[8]

In 2025, Illinois Tech reported on Mansury's research into sustainable farming and forest communities in Indonesia. The project examined the relationship between poverty, agricultural practices, deforestation, access to markets, and the adoption of sustainable farming practices.[9]

Mansury has also participated in discussions of climate resilience and nature-based solutions in Indonesia. In 2025, he participated in the RESILIENCE conference in Jakarta, where researchers and other participants discussed approaches to climate resilience and the role of nature and communities in climate adaptation.[10]
