Xanthe Clay is a British Food writer and columnist for The Daily Telegraph[1], where she provides cooking tips and carries out taste tests on different food products.[2] She was born in 1967 and grew up in Islington, North London.[3] She is the author of five cookery books, on subjects like seasonal ingredients and simple recipes to cook at home.[4]
Early life and education
[edit]Clay attended Cheltenham Ladies' College boarding school and then Marlborough College.[3] After school, she backpacked through Sudan, Egypt, Sinai, China and around South America before going back to London to work at Dillons the Bookstore selling cookery books.[1][3] She then attended Leiths School of Food and Wine where she trained to be a chef.[5]
Career
[edit]Besides being a columnist for The Daily Telegraph, Clay has also contributed to Good Food Magazine [6], Delicious Magazine and Sainsbury's Magazine.[7]
Clay served as the President of the Guild of Food Writers from 2014 to 2018.[8][9][10][11][12] She is the UK & Ireland Academy Chair for the World's 50 Best Restaurants[13][14] and a trustee at the André Simon Awards.[15]
In 2014, she chaired the Focus on Food conference in Belfast to develop food tourism in the city, organised by Belfast City Council and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.[16] In 2023, she formed part of the judging panel at Borough Market's Young Marketeers Winter Soup Sale, run by School Food Matters in partnership with Borough Market.[17] She has also appeared in BBC One's show Masterchef: The Professionals, as a guest judge in the quarterfinals episode in 2026.[18]
Awards
[edit]Clay received the Contribution to Fine Food Awards at the Great Taste Golden Fork Dinner in 2019, organised by the Guild of Fine Food.[19]
