Wehome (Korean: 위홈) is a South Korean company that operates an online homesharing platform. It was the first homesharing business designated under South Korea's ICT regulatory sandbox, which allowed it to broker urban homestays to domestic as well as foreign guests, and in May 2026 it was converted to a temporary-permit operator.[1]

History

[edit]

Founder Cho San-gu, a former new-business executive at LG Uplus, launched the hanok-focused homesharing platform Kozaza in 2012 and founded Wehome in 2019.[2][3] Under South Korean law, urban homestays registered as "foreign tourist urban homestays" may host only foreign guests; Wehome obtained a regulatory sandbox exemption in 2019 to serve domestic guests as well, and began service in July 2020.[4]

During the COVID-19 pandemic the company brokered detached homes for self-quarantine stays. By December 2022 it had reported about ₩10 billion in cumulative sales and around 20,000 guests over 80,000 nights.[4] The exemption area was extended from Seoul to Busan on 24 October 2023.[5] In a 2025 interview, Cho said the platform had recorded more than ₩25 billion in transactions, over 3,000 hosts and over 200,000 guests during the pilot, while criticizing what he described as reverse discrimination against domestic firms.[6] In May 2026 the 44th ICT regulatory sandbox deliberation committee converted Wehome to a temporary-permit operator.[1]

Services

[edit]

The platform lists hanok, detached houses and apartments in Seoul and Busan; hosts must follow the permit conditions, including a limit of 180 operating days per year.[7] In 2022 it was reported to be the only South Korean company listed when Google Travel added a vacation-rental tab.[4] In April 2026 it added five Asian mobile payment services, including Alipay and WeChat Pay.[8]

In June 2026, together with the Busan Metropolitan City government, Wehome ran "K-POPSTAY BUSAN 2026", which placed overseas fans attending BTS's world tour concerts in Busan in residents' homes; 27 local hosts accommodated 65 guests from 15 countries.[9]
