Wagotabi (Japanese: 和語旅) is an educational role-playing video game developed and published by Wagotabi Limited.[1] The game combines role-playing mechanics with Japanese language instruction, gradually replacing the player's native language with Japanese as they progress through the adventure.
Wagotabi was released for iOS[2] and Android[3] on October 1, 2024. It was later released for Windows, macOS, and Linux through Steam[4] on August 13, 2025. In March 2026, the developers announced that a version for Nintendo Switch is in development, with planned cloud save synchronization between the Switch, mobile, and PC versions.[5]
Gameplay
[edit]Wagotabi combines traditional role-playing game mechanics with Japanese language instruction. Players travel through locations based on real Japanese prefectures,[6] completing quests, interacting with non-player characters, solving puzzles, and learning Japanese vocabulary, grammar, kana, and kanji.[7]
A central gameplay mechanic is progressive language immersion,[8] in which interface elements and dialogue gradually replace the player's native language with Japanese as additional vocabulary and writing systems are introduced.[9]
Gameplay features include:
- Locations based on real places in Japan, with three currently available and two more planned through future updates.[10]
- Interactive dialogue.
- Progressive replacement of the interface language with Japanese.
- Collection of kana and kanji that unlock new conversations and gameplay content.
- An in-game dictionary containing learned vocabulary and example sentences.
- Language-themed puzzles, quests, and mini-games designed to reinforce grammar and vocabulary.
Plot
[edit]The story follows the player character as they leave their home country to travel across Japan in pursuit of mastery of the Japanese language. The protagonist seeks to uphold a family tradition started by an ancestor who is believed to have become a Grand Master after collecting all forty seven hanko (seals) from Japan's prefectures.
During the journey, the player explores different areas of Japan, completes quests, helps local residents, and challenges the Grand Masters of each prefecture to obtain their respective hanko.
Reception
[edit]Wagotabi was covered by gaming and technology publications including Eurogamer Portugal,[8] Steam Deck HQ,[11] MacMagazine,[12] Tokyo Weekender,[6] Destructoid,[7] KeenGamer,[9] and Full Circle.[13] Publications highlighted the game's combination of role-playing mechanics and Japanese language instruction, particularly its gradual immersion system, educational design, writing practice, pronunciation features, readable interface, and use of real Japanese locations. Reviewers also described the minimalist graphics as functional and well suited to the game's educational focus, while noting that players seeking more visually detailed presentation might find the graphics overly simplistic.
The mobile versions received favorable user feedback. On the App Store, players highlighted the combination of Japanese language learning and role-playing gameplay, while some reviewers expressed a desire for additional content and gameplay variety.[2] The Android version similarly received favorable ratings, with users noting its educational approach and accessibility for Japanese learners, although some reported technical issues and requested further refinements to the learning experience.[3]
The Steam version achieved an "Overwhelmingly Positive" user rating, with more than 1,400 reviews and 98% of them recommending the game.[14] Steam users frequently described the game as an engaging supplement to traditional Japanese study methods rather than a replacement for them. Comments highlighted features such as the interactive dictionary, voiced dialogue, contextual presentation of grammar and vocabulary, and gradual language immersion. Some players compared its progression and exploration to the Pokémon series, while others noted that prior familiarity with hiragana and basic grammar improved the experience. Suggestions for improvement included expanding practice exercises and sentence repetition to encourage active recall, increasing the variety of educational activities, and providing additional content as players progressed.
