Viktor Sheleg (born 11 January 1962 in Lomonosov, Russia) is a contemporary Latvian artist.

Since 1964, he has lived and worked in Riga, Latvia.

Life and work

Viktor Sheleg mastered painting independently by studying the history of world art.

His family greatly influenced his work; from early childhood, his parents helped and supported his passion.

His older brother, Mikhail Sheleg (singer-songwriter), who was into painting at the time, had a big influence on Viktor.

When it came time to pursue academic art education, his teachers advised him to abandon academic education in favour of the vivid, individual artistic style that had already begun to take shape by that time.

He spent his childhood and youth in Liepāja, Latvia.

His career as an artist began in 1990.

In 1994, he debuted with a solo exhibition at the Ars Moderna International Centre for Contemporary Art in Latvia, where art critics presented a new direction in the visual arts called ‘Expressive Syntheticism,’ based on the work of Viktor Sheleg.

Participated in events organised by the Latvian Association of Art Galleries (Latvijas mākslas galeriju asociācija).

In 1995, two paintings by the artist, “Girlfriends’ and “, were presented and sold at the DROUT_RICHELIEU auction in Paris.

The Centre organised the auction for Contemporary Russian Culture (Paris-Moscow-New York).

In 1997, the International Centre for Contemporary Art in Latvia honoured Viktor Sheleg with an award in the category "

In 2012, the Latvian Embassy in Astana (Kazakhstan) organised an exhibition of Latvian artists, featuring.

Sheleg's paintings are held in contemporary art museums in Vladivostok (Russia) and Jersey City (United States).

One aspect of Victor Sheleg's career is the prolific nature of his work. Over nearly three decades, between 1990 and 2025, he created over 2,500 paintings. This dedication to his craft has resulted in a vast number of works, and it is noteworthy that most of his works are now in private collections. This speaks to the profound impact his art has had on those who have encountered it and underscores his status as a highly regarded and collectable contemporary artist.

Viktor Sheleg's work is characterised by a deep sense of freedom and a critical understanding of social conventions and conformism. It has crossed geographical boundaries, reaching an international audience through participation in numerous prestigious art fairs around the world.

Mother: Galina Fiodrovna Sheleg (Lopatynska), biology teacher, 1928–2001

Brother: Mikhail Sheleg, Russian singer, poet, writer, musician, composer, and singer-songwriter of Russian chanson.

Wife: Alla Sheleg (Khmelevskaya), clothing designer
