Hewa Komanage Upali Dharmadasa (died 25 July 2026) was a Sri Lankan industrialist, business personality, cricket administrator and diplomat. He had held several key high-profile leadership positions at corporate organizations during his illustrious career spanning over three decades. His father H. K. Dharmadasa was a popular business tycoon who was also the founder of Nawaloka Hospital.
Career
[edit]Upali completed his primary and secondary education at the Ananda College.[1] He graduated from the Wandsworth Technical College.
His first involvement in the context of administration with Sri Lanka Cricket came during the year 1989, when he was elected as the Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) and served for a period of six years until 1995.[2] In April 1996, Upali was elected as the President of Sri Lanka Cricket.[3] His first term as President of Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka ended in 1998 after serving for two-year period. In 2010, he was appointed the interim president of Sri Lanka Cricket.[4][5]
In January 2012, Upali was unanimously elected as the President of Sri Lanka Cricket, in what was effectively his third tenure as the President of Sri Lanka Cricket.[6][7] Upali was elected unopposed after Thilanga Sumathipala having withdrawn his nomination from contesting for the post of president of Sri Lanka Cricket.[8][9] In early March 2013, Upali Dharmadasa reconfirmed that he would be contesting for the Sri Lanka Cricket elections for the post of Sri Lanka Cricket.[10] However, his nomination was rejected by the executive committee of Sri Lanka Cricket after being notified about his ineligibility for not having played first-class cricket.[11] Upali's brother Jayantha Dharmadasa subsequently became the President of Sri Lanka Cricket from the late March 2013 with immediate effect.[12]
In 2007, he made his mark in career as a diplomat after being appointed as the Honorary Consul General for the Kingdom of Morocco in Sri Lanka.[13] In June 2013, he was appointed as the chairman of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC) and he officially assumed his duties with immediate effect as of 6 June 2013.[14][15] He also served in as the president of the Sri Lanka Timber Merchants' Association for a brief tenure. In June 2014, he assumed the role as the non executive director at Seylan Bank.[1][16] He also served as the managing director of Nawaloka Group of Companies.[17] He also opened a restaurant named as Upali's in Colombo.[18]
Death
[edit]Upali died on 25 July 2026 at the age of 71.[19][20] The funeral of Upali was held on 29 July 2026 at Borella General Cemetery.[21]
Sri Lanka Cricket announced that the players representing Jaffna Kings, Kandy Royals, Galle Gallants and Dambulla Sixers in the 2026 Lanka Premier League would be wearing black armbands in remembrance of Upali Dharmadasa.[22]
