The Uganda Rowing Federation (URF) is the national governing body for the sport of rowing in Uganda. It is registered with Uganda's National Council of Sports (NCS) and is affiliated internationally to World Rowing (FISA), the sport's world governing body based in Switzerland.[1] Continentally, Uganda was one of five founding member associations of the African Rowing Federation (FASA), established on 24 December 1992 in Cairo, Egypt, alongside the rowing associations of Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia and Zimbabwe.[2]
Governance
[edit]The federation is headquartered at the Lugogo Sports Complex in Kampala.[3] Hamza Kahwa has served as president of the URF since 2013, and was re-elected unopposed to a fourth term for 2021 to 2025.[4] Nakosozi Batenga serves as secretary general.[3] On his re-election, Kahwa set out an agenda of strengthening the federation's and clubs' structures, securing more equipment such as ergometers and boats, holding regular competitions, and increasing the number of Ugandan rowers qualifying for the Olympic Games.[4]
Rowing clubs affiliated to the federation have included Wellness, Cranes, Lake Shore, Green Belt, Defenders, Nalubaale, Maroons, Express, and a club fielded by the Uganda People's Defence Force.[4]
International representation
[edit]The URF has represented Uganda at continental championships organised under FASA, including the Africa Rowing Regatta.[5] With support from the Uganda Olympic Committee and World Rowing's Olympic Solidarity programme, the federation facilitated Ugandan athletes' travel to the 2023 Africa Rowing Regatta in Tunis, Tunisia, where rower Grace Kathleen Noble secured qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics in the women's single sculls event.[5] Noble had earlier become the first Ugandan rower to compete at the Olympics, at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and her Paris 2024 berth made her Uganda's second consecutive Olympic rowing representative.[6] At the Paris Games, Noble was one of only 25 athletes on Uganda's Olympic team and the country's sole rowing representative.[7]
