Tyris Monte "Ty" Audronis is an American technologist, author and inventor whose work has focused on unmanned aircraft, autonomous systems and real-time data visualization. He is a co-founder of the Houston-based technology company Tempest Droneworx.[1] Audronis and his work have been profiled by Military.com and InnovationMap.[2][1]

Career

[edit]

Audronis served in the United States Navy before pursuing work in technology and unmanned aircraft.[2] He subsequently worked with unmanned aircraft and wrote technical books on drones and other technology subjects.[1]

In 2021, Audronis and Dana Abramovitz co-founded Tempest Droneworx in Houston, Texas.[1] The development of the company was influenced by Audronis's experience with the 2018 Camp Fire, which destroyed his family's home in Paradise, California. Military.com reported that the disaster led Audronis to consider ways of using technology to provide earlier information about wildfires and other emergencies.[2]

Audronis developed the concept that became Tempest Droneworx's Harbinger software, which combines information from multiple sources into a real-time three-dimensional representation.[2][1] The technology was subsequently developed for disaster-response and military applications.[2]

Audronis has served as principal investigator on research projects awarded to Tempest Droneworx by the United States Air Force. A 2023 Direct-to-Phase-II Small Business Innovation Research award of approximately $1.25 million concerned the use of Harbinger for real-time surveillance of airfields and landing zones.[3]

He later served as principal investigator on Air Force research involving airspace visualization, conflict detection and deconfliction.[4]

In 2025, InnovationMap reported on Audronis and Tempest Droneworx following the company's recognition at the SXSW Pitch competition.[5]

Writing

[edit]

Audronis has written four technical books concerning unmanned aircraft, animation and game development.[1] His books include Lightning Fast Animation in Element 3D (2014), Building Multicopter Video Drones (2014), Buildbox 2.x Game Development (2016), and Designing Purpose-Built Drones for Ardupilot Pixhawk 2.1 (2017).

Audronis has also written about unmanned aircraft and aerial photography for Digital Photography Review (DPReview). His work for the publication included its 2016 roundup of camera drones under $1,500.[6]

Inventions

[edit]

Audronis is the named inventor of technologies concerning unmanned aircraft, airspace management and sensor-data visualization.

In 2026, the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted U.S. Patent 12,638,861, Layer approach to managing airspace of large groups of drones. The patent names Tyris Monte Audronis as inventor and Tempest Droneworx, Inc. as assignee.[7]

Audronis is also the named inventor on a patent application titled Systems and methods for fusing sensor data from drones in a virtual environment, concerning the aggregation of sensor information from unmanned vehicles in a virtual three-dimensional environment.[8]
