The Midgetmen, later performing as THEMM!, are an American punk rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in 2001. Associated with the city's do-it-yourself scene, the band plays a style its members call "slop punk" and has released a series of albums independently.[1][2] Since 2008 it has hosted Texas Jumpstart, a recurring unofficial day party held during South by Southwest.[3][4]
History
[edit]The Midgetmen formed in Austin in 2001; its members balanced the group with day jobs, several in the local software industry.[5] Working largely without label support, the band played more than 280 shows over the following two decades, touring the Midwest, Northeast, and West Coast in addition to regular Austin dates, and performed an official South by Southwest showcase in 2012.[6] An early album, Pool Party Emergency (2002), was reviewed in The Austin Chronicle in early 2003[1] and in the punk zine Maximum Rocknroll.[7] The band followed with High Life (2004),[8][9] Show Pony (2008), and Loud Enough (2011), the last coinciding with an opening slot for Titus Andronicus at Emo's.[10] Over the years the band opened for or shared bills with national touring acts including Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Diarrhea Planet, and Free Energy.[10][2] In 2012 the band marked its tenth anniversary with a concert at the Mohawk and a set of "Weird Al" Yankovic covers.[5] That June, the Austin City Council issued a proclamation declaring June 14, 2012, "The Midgetmen Day," at a ceremony where the band played an acoustic Weird Al cover.[11] Its fifth album, Hobbytown, appeared in 2015.[2] The group later began performing as THEMM!, releasing the EP Mmm in 2024.[12]
Musical style
[edit]The band describes its sound as "slop punk," a term also used for it in the Austin press.[13] Critics have characterized the music as fast, loud, and humorous pub- and pop-punk rooted in the local scene.[1]
Texas Jumpstart
[edit]Since 2008 the band has hosted Texas Jumpstart (later styled JumpstarTX and JSTX), a free, unofficial day party during South by Southwest, held for many years at Side Bar in downtown Austin and reaching its eighteenth edition in 2026.[3][4][6] The party has featured touring acts including Diarrhea Planet, Ezra Furman, and Slothrust.[4] At the 2014 edition, Melissa Etheridge made an unannounced guest appearance, joining the band for a cover of Tom Petty's "Refugee."[14] The band also performed at Fun Fun Fun Fest, opening the 2012 festival with its Weird Al tribute set[15][16] and returning in 2014.[17]
