Tabbit is an AI browser developed by the Lightyear Beyond team within the Chinese technology company Meituan. It entered public beta on 2 March 2026 for Microsoft Windows and macOS.[1][2]

Development and release

[edit]

The team behind Tabbit was formed from the application group of Lightyear Beyond after Meituan acquired the artificial-intelligence company in 2023. National Business Daily described Tabbit as the team's first public product following the acquisition and placed its launch within Meituan's broader effort to develop consumer AI applications.[1] An English-language feature by KrASIA reported that the browser was intended to make agent tools accessible to nontechnical users rather than limit them to a single Meituan model.[3]

Version 1.0 was released on 9 June 2026, one hundred days after the public beta began. It introduced a paid tier for heavy users while retaining a free tier. Jiemian News analyzed the release as an attempt to test whether a consumer AI application could cover its computing costs without giving up free access.[4]

Design and independent testing

[edit]

Tabbit combines a conventional browser interface with chatbot and agent modes. The agent can act on webpages, while the browser can use tabs, bookmarks and files as context. It also includes user-created commands called skills.[2][5]

GeekPark tested Tabbit by asking its agent to publish material to a social-media account. The task was completed, but the test encountered truncated titles, repeated steps and points where manual interaction was still required. The review also raised privacy concerns about importing active login sessions from another browser.[2]

LeiTech used Tabbit as a primary browser and compared it with Quark and OpenAI's Atlas. Its reviewer reported that the browser could collect research material, compare product information and create scripts for webpage tasks, but that results still required checking and some automated operations produced errors.[5]

Market position

[edit]

National Business Daily described the AI-browser market as crowded and quoted outside analysts who questioned whether Tabbit was sufficiently differentiated from established competitors. The analysts suggested that its longer-term prospects might depend on browser automation or integration with Meituan's local-services ecosystem.[1] In a later analysis, Jiemian News noted that the product had not yet been integrated with Meituan's core services and argued that it still needed to demonstrate stable use in office work, information processing and web automation.[4]

Open-source licensing dispute

[edit]

Shortly after the public beta began, the developer of the open-source Read Frog extension alleged that Tabbit had used project code without complying with its licence. Tabbit removed the affected translation component, published the modified code and issued a joint statement with the developer saying that the dispute had been resolved.[1]
