Draft:Stephen Liew

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephen Liew is an Australian dentist. He was Federal President of the Australian Dental Association (ADA) from 2022 to 2023 and was elected Speaker of the General Assembly of the FDI World Dental Federation in 2024.

Early life and education

[edit]

Liew graduated in dentistry from the University of Melbourne in 2006. During his final year of study, he undertook volunteer dental work in Aboriginal communities in Central Australia and in Gippsland, Victoria, and later volunteered in Nepal.[1]

Career

[edit]

Liew joined the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch Oral Health Committee in 2008 and was elected to the Victorian Board in 2010. He joined the ADA Federal Council in 2016 and subsequently served on a number of professional committees and review panels.[2]

In 2013, Liew became a partner at Camberwell Dental Group in Melbourne, where he continued to practise while undertaking professional leadership roles.[3]

Australian Dental Association

[edit]

Liew served as Vice-President of the Australian Dental Association before being elected Federal President in 2022. He served as president from 2022 to 2023.[4]

As ADA President, Liew was quoted in Australian media on issues including access to dental care, public dental funding, the dental workforce and oral health prevention. In 2023, ABC News reported his support for expanded access to publicly funded dental services for groups including people in aged care, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people on low incomes.[5]

Liew appeared before the Australian Senate inquiry into the provision of and access to dental services in Australia in 2023 as ADA Federal President.[6]

His comments on dental issues also received media coverage outside the context of ADA governance. In 2020, The Sydney Morning Herald reported comments from Liew about the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental practices.[7]

In 2022, The Sydney Morning Herald and 3AW reported his comments on dental procedures promoted through TikTok and other social-media platforms, including do-it-yourself approaches to teeth whitening and straightening.[8][9]

In October 2023, 7NEWS reported Liew's account of treating a two-year-old child who had developed severe dental problems after being bottle-fed cola from birth, alongside his calls for changes to public dental funding.[10]

International dental leadership

[edit]

In September 2024, Liew was elected Speaker of the General Assembly of the FDI World Dental Federation. The FDI General Assembly is the organisation's governing body, and the Speaker is elected by the General Assembly.[11]

The Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch reported that Liew's election was the third time since 1900 that an Australian had held the position.[12]

Liew's international role was profiled by Bite magazine in 2025, which described him as Speaker and Chair of the FDI World Dental Parliament and discussed his work in the role following his election in 2024.[13]
