St. Joseph College of Communication (commonly called SJCC or Media Village) is a media college in Changanassery, Kottayam district, Kerala, India. It was set up in 2004 by the Archdiocese of Changanassery and is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The college is accredited B++ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[1]
India Today ranked SJCC 15th in India for mass communication in 2020, and Outlook placed it 16th in 2019.[2] Film director Mathukutty Xavier, an alumnus of the college, received the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the 67th National Film Awards in 2019.[3][4]
History
[edit]The college was founded in August 2004. It grew from an initiative of Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil of the Archeparchy of Changanassery, who wanted to create a media training institution in the region.[5] The archdiocese already ran several educational institutions in Kerala, including St. Berchmans College, Changanassery and Assumption College, Changanassery.[1]
The college was inaugurated on 2 July 2005 by Oommen Chandy, who was then Chief Minister of Kerala.[6] The campus complex, called Media Village, was later dedicated by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the then President of India.[6]
The first principal was Prof. John Sankaramangalam, a filmmaker and former head of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. He led the college from 2004 to 2011 and served as Academic Chairman until 2018.[5] In February 2019, the college began the Prof. John Sankaramangalam Memorial Lecture Series. The first lecture was given by filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan.[7]

Campus
[edit]The campus covers 5.30 acres at Kurishummoodu P.O., Changanassery, Kottayam – 686104.[1] It includes production studios, a library, computer labs, a gymnasium, and student hostels. The campus also houses several operational media units used for student training.[8]

- A Dolby Atmos post-production studio (73 sq m) with a 9.1.6 surround sound setup
- A television studio (52 sq m) with multicamera facilities and a control room
- A green matte studio (135 sq m) for VFX production
- A photography studio (61.2 sq m)
- A stop motion studio with eight shooting cubicles and Dragonframe software
- A 2D animation lab (95 sq m) with 60 lightboxes
- Three digital audio workstation rooms (35 sq m) running Pro Tools and Logic Pro
- A sculpture studio, an architectural drawing studio, and a 3D printer
Media Village Cinemas
[edit]The campus has a 235-seat cinema hall (353 sq m) with a Barco F-80 4K laser projector and a 7.1 QSC audio system. It is used for film screenings, industry events, and film studies classes.[8]
90.8 Radio Media Village
[edit]The college operates 90.8 Radio Media Village, a community FM station. It was the first community FM station licensed in Kottayam district. The station transmits at 50 watts and covers a 15-kilometre range. It has received six national awards from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.[8]
MVTV
[edit]MVTV is a student-run online TV channel operated through YouTube. It is used for news, documentary, and entertainment productions by students.[8]
MV Studios
[edit]MV Studios is an in-house production unit that has made advertisement films, short films, and awareness content. It produced road safety films in partnership with the Motor Vehicles Department, Government of Kerala, and Maruti Suzuki.[8]
