Shefeen Ahamed K (13 August 1976 – 31 August 2026) was an Indian police officer and a 2003-batch officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS) of the Odisha cadre. During his career, he served in several positions in the Odisha Police and, on inter-cadre deputation, in the Kerala Police. He later served as Inspector General of Police in the Crime Branch of the Odisha Police.[1]

Early life and education

Ahamed was born on 13 August 1976 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He studied civil engineering at TKM College of Engineering. He later undertook postgraduate studies at Osmania University.

He joined the Indian Police Service in 2003 and was allocated to the Odisha cadre.

Career

Odisha Police

Ahamed began his policing career in Odisha and served in a number of district and other assignments. By 2009, he was serving as Superintendent of Police (Vigilance) in Berhampur. In December 2009, he was appointed Superintendent of Police of Berhampur following a reshuffle of senior police officers.[2]

He subsequently served as Superintendent of Police of Kalahandi. In March 2013, he headed the district police investigation into the leak of Plus Two examination question papers.[3]

Deputation to Kerala

Ahamed moved to Kerala on inter-cadre deputation in 2013. During his deputation, he served in a number of positions in the Kerala Police, including Superintendent of Police of Thiruvananthapuram Rural and later as a Deputy Inspector General of Police.

He was involved in the implementation of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) in Kerala and served as a nodal officer for the project.

During the 2018 Kerala floods, Ahamed was assigned responsibilities for coordinating rescue and relief activities in [[Pathanamthitta district]].

His five-year inter-cadre deputation ended in 2018.[4]

Return to Odisha

After his deputation in Kerala, Ahamed returned to the Odisha Police. He later served as Deputy Inspector General of Police of the South-Western Range, Koraput.

During this posting, his jurisdiction included areas affected by left-wing extremism. In 2020, Ahamed was involved in efforts to expand mobile connectivity in Swabhiman Anchal in Malkangiri district, where new mobile infrastructure was introduced to improve connectivity for residents and security personnel.[5][6]

In December 2020, he was transferred from the South-Western Range and posted as Deputy Inspector General (Technical).[7]

Ahamed was subsequently promoted to the rank of Inspector General of Police. He held assignments including Inspector General of Police, Fire Services and Home Guards, and Inspector General of Police, Human Rights Protection Cell.[8]

In July 2023, the Odisha government transferred Ahamed from the Human Rights Protection Cell and appointed him Inspector General of Police, Crime Branch.[9] He subsequently served as Inspector General of Police, CID Crime Branch, Odisha.[1]

Awards and honours

Ahamed received police commendations and service medals during his career. The Indian Police Service Civil List records Director General of Police Commendation Medals awarded to him in 2006 and 2017.[8]

His other honours included the Police Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak and the Odisha Governor's Medal.

Death

Ahamed died on 31 August 2026 at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where he had been undergoing treatment for cancer. He was 50.[10]

Following his death, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and senior police officials expressed condolences.[10]
