Doctor of Technical Sciences (PhD) (1976), professor (1979). Member of Armenian Engineering Academy (1994), International Engineering Academy (1997). Honoured Inventor of Armenia (1996)
Biography
[edit]Mkrtchyan was born in 1935 in the village of Nor Armavir (Hoktemberyan region of Armenian SSR). In 1957 he graduated from Yerevan State University, Department of Physics. Same year he began working career in newly established YERNIIMM institute (also known as Mergelyan institute), which was one of the flagman scientific institutions in the field of early computers in Soviet Union. From 1957 to 1962 he took part in complex development of "Yerevan", "Hrazdan-2", "Nairi" electronic-calculating machines (computers), which later found implementation in practice in different manufacturing and production facilities in USSR.
In 1965 he completed his graduate studies with merits at the Moscow Institute of Aviation. His field of specialization was neural networks and their schematic design, neural logic development in circuitry. In 1969-1971 he orchestrated and led testing of "Nairi-4" – another flagman of Soviet computers of that era, holding position of Deputy Chief Designer of "Nairi-4" at YERNIIMM/Mergelyan Institute. In 1975 Senik Mkrtchyan was awarded Doctor of Technical Sciences (PhD) title.
1977 marked his joining Yerevan Polytechnic Institute (later State Engineering University of Armenia) where he stayed and continued his career till his last days. From 1977 to 1999 he headed Chair of Microelectronics and Semiconductor Devices at the Department of Technical Cybernetics. In 1988 – 1992 he also served as Dean of the Department of Technical Cybernetics of SEUA. For his merits and long-term serving in the University and educating numerous future scientists in his field, in 2003 by the president of Armenia Senik Mkrtchyan was awarded one of the most prominent medals in the country- the Anania Shirakatsi medal.
Senik Mkrtchyan's works are related to the issues of Computer Science, elements of automatization, schematechnics, micro- and nanotechnologies. He was directly involved in creation of first computers, (a k a electronic computing machines) in Armenia. Senik Mkrtchyan developed models of elements with neural logic, both in theory and in practice. He developed and implemented in manufacturing the efficient technology of electronic devices and integral circuits. The key component of that technology was specialized hybrid integral micro-circuitry. Senik Mkrtchyan dedicated later part of his scientific career to the issues he started researching in his student years- particularly the development of new generation computers, based on neural elements and neural networks. He issued numerous scientific works and articles dedicated to neurocomputers. In today's computer world, Senik Mkrtchyan's theories of new generation computing is close to what modern super-computers are based on.
As scientific leader and mentor, Senik Mkrtchyan's contribution to his students and growing of new scientists is hard to overstate. He guided scientific works of hundreds of his scholars, dozens of whom were awarded technical degrees under his guidance, including 4 PhDs. Co-authored dozens of scientific publications and textbooks, mostly with his scholars.
