Sassa Magosuke (佐々 孫介; died September 27, 1556) was a Japanese samurai of the Sengoku period. He served as a retainer to Oda Nobunaga during the early phase of Nobunaga's consolidation of power over Owari Province. He was an elder brother of the prominent daimyō Sassa Narimasa.[1]

Biography

[edit]

Born into the Sassa clan in Owari Province, Magosuke was the second son of Sassa Morimasa. He served Oda Nobunaga alongside his elder brother, Sassa Hayato no Kami, and his younger brother, Sassa Narimasa.[2]

During the succession disputes within the Oda clan, Magosuke remained loyal to Nobunaga against his younger brother, Oda Nobuyuki, who attempted to usurp control of the clan with the support of senior retainers such as Shibata Katsuie and Hayashi Hidesada.

Battle of Inō and Death

[edit]

In October 1556 (the 22nd day of the 8th month, Kōji 2, in the traditional lunisolar calendar), Nobuyuki's forces clashed with Nobunaga's loyalists at the Battle of Ino in northern Owari.

Magosuke served in the vanguard of Nobunaga's army. During the intense fighting against the troops commanded by Shibata Katsuie, Magosuke fought bravely on the front lines but was killed in action. Following his death and the subsequent death of his elder brother Hayato no Kami at the Battle of Okehazama in 1560, the headship of the Sassa clan passed to their younger brother, Narimasa.[3]
