Sangok Seok (Korean: 석상옥; born 1975) is a South Korean roboticist and business executive. He is the chief executive officer of NAVER LABS and NAVER LABS Europe.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Seok was born in South Korea, in 1975. He studied mechanical and aerospace engineering at Seoul National University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 2002 and a master’s degree in 2004.[2][3] He received a PhD in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2014.[3][2] From 2009 to 2014, Seok studied in MIT’s Biomimetic Robotics Laboratory. [4] He studied robot driving systems and dynamic locomotion, and participated in the development of the MIT Cheetah, a quadrupedal robot, during his doctoral studies in mechanical engineering at MIT.[2] In 2016, Seok and his co-authors received the Best Paper Award from the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics.[5]

[edit]From 2004 to 2009, Seok worked at the Korean division of National Instruments as an applications engineer and marketing engineer.[2] His work involved automation, measurement, and engineering systems.[3]
After completing his doctorate, he joined Samsung Electronics’ Mechatronics Research and Development Center as a principal engineer, working there from 2014 to 2015.[3][2]
NAVER LABS
[edit]In September 2015, Seok joined NAVER’s newly organized robotics research team and led the robotics organization.[3] He became CEO of Naver Labs in 2019, and CEO of Naver Labs Europe in 2020. [6] [3][1]
In 2023, Seok was appointed vice chairman of the Business Executive Council of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea.[7]
Recognition
[edit]In 2019, Seok received the ‘Korea Engineer Award’ from Korea Industrial Technology Association and Ministry of Science and ICT.[8] [9] and received commendation from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy at the Korea Robot Awards.[10] In 2022, he was awarded the Bronze Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit.[11]
The Seoul AI Policy Conference introduced Seok Sang-ok as leading research on a next-generation technology platform integrating AI, robotics, autonomous driving, and digital twins.[1]
