Robyn Martin is a New Zealand food writer and cookbook author. She was the food editor of New Zealand Woman's Weekly for 22 years, succeeding Tui Flower in 1984. She has written and contributed to numerous cookbooks and has worked in food publishing and recipe development.[1]

Early career

[edit]

Martin began her career in food publishing at the age of 17, working as an assistant to food editor Tui Flower at New Zealand Woman's Weekly.[1] She subsequently studied home science at the University of Otago before returning to work with Flower as a home economist.[1]

In 1988, Martin was reported as a member of the steering committee of the New Zealand Guild of Food Writers.[2]

Career

[edit]

When Flower retired from New Zealand Woman's Weekly in 1984, she approached Martin about taking over her position as food editor. Martin remained food editor for 22 years.[1] A 2009 article about Martin's successor, Helen Jackson, described Jackson as the fourth food editor in the magazine's history, following Flower, Martin and Julie Le Clerc.[3]

Martin subsequently continued working as a cookbook author and food writer. The Otago Daily Times has described her as a "prolific cookery writer" and has reviewed several of her cookbooks.[4][5]

In 2012, the Otago Daily Times described Martin as one of New Zealand's most prolific cookery writers in a review of her book Simply Delicious Recipes for Crockpots and Slow Cookers.[5] In another article that year, the newspaper referred to her as a former food editor of New Zealand Woman's Weekly and a prolific cookbook author while discussing her book Relish: Delicious Preserves for Modern Food.[4]

Cookbooks

[edit]

Martin has written and edited numerous cookbooks, including titles published as part of the New Zealand Woman's Weekly cookery series.

The National Library of New Zealand records New Zealand Woman's Weekly Fabulous Food, edited by Martin, as having been published in 1990.[6]

Her cookbook Easy as 1 2 3 was published by Random House in 2004, with Martin credited as the author.[7]

Other books associated with Martin include Café Style Food, published in 1997,[8] Taste of New Zealand Winter, published in 1997,[9] and New Zealand Quick 'n' Easy: Chicken Starters, Stir Fries, Roasts & More, published in 1994.[10]

Martin was also the editor of New Zealand Woman's Weekly Fabulous Food, one of the cookery books published as part of the magazine's cookery collection.[6]

Later work

[edit]

Martin remained involved in food writing after her tenure as food editor. In 2018, she was described as a former long-serving food editor of New Zealand Woman's Weekly in an article about the legacy of Tui Flower.[11]

In 2025, New Zealand Woman's Weekly published a profile of Martin's relationship with Flower and her involvement with the Tui Flower Foundation. The article described Martin as Flower's protégé and close friend and reported on her involvement with the foundation established in Flower's memory.[1]
