Restart Records was an American independent record label based in El Paso, Texas, founded in 2000 by Silas Carter and Jim Ward (co-founder and guitarist of At the Drive-In and Sparta). Formed as the direct successor to the El Paso venue and shop Headquarter Records, the label served as crucial infrastructure for the region's post-hardcore explosion and the early catalog releases of members who went on to form The Mars Volta and Sparta.[1]
History
[edit]In 2000, following the departure of co-founder Joanna Sosa from Headquarter Records, Silas Carter and Jim Ward closed the physical retail and venue space at 209 Cincinnati Avenue to focus strictly on record publishing, manufacturing, and national distribution under the name Restart Records.[1][2]
The label managed pressing, reissue, and distribution duties for key releases tied to At the Drive-In during their international breakthrough following Relationship of Command. Most notably, Restart issued the 2000 enhanced CD reissue of At the Drive-In's 1996 debut studio album, Acrobatic Tenement (Catalog # RES94 / 759528-009421), as well as physical single pressings for "One Armed Scissor".[3]
Restart Records was also the central publishing outlet for the early works of De Facto—the instrumental dub group featuring Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Omar Rodríguez-López, Isaiah "Ikey" Owens, and Jeremy Ward prior to the formation of The Mars Volta. Restart released De Facto's debut album, How Do You Dub? You Fight for Dub. You Plug Dub In. (Catalog # RST 003), on both CD and vinyl formats in 2001.[1][3]
In addition to ATDI and De Facto projects, Restart Records funded and distributed physical releases for regional post-hardcore and indie rock acts, including Airplanes Are Better's Power EP (2001), Siva's Mosaic Of Sleepers (2003), and early pressings for bands featuring future members of Sparta and Sleepercar.[4]
