Raghavan Vidya is a British oncoplastic breast surgeon and clinical academic whose work has contributed to the development and wider adoption of muscle-sparing, pre-pectoral implant-based breast reconstruction. She is a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham.[1]

Early life and education

Vidya was born in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India.[1]

She completed an MS in General Surgery at Coimbatore Medical College in 1993. After moving to the United Kingdom, she undertook higher surgical training across the Wessex and West Midlands regions and earned an MD (Research) from the University of Edinburgh for work examining the role of aromatase inhibitors in breast cancer treatment ="RWT">"Raghavan Vidya MD, FRCS." Career

Vidya has worked as a consultant breast surgeon at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust since completing higher surgical training in 2006.[1][2] Alongside her clinical practice, she is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham.[3]

She holds several leadership roles within professional organisations. In November 2025, she was appointed Honorary Secretary of the Association of Breast Surgery (ABS).[4] She serves as International Lead for the Royal College of Surgeons International Surgical Training Programme (ISTP) for Breast Surgery, and as Associate Director of Genomics for the West Midlands.[5][6]

Vidya is the founder of the Virtual Global Breast Hub, a platform intended to support international collaboration and training in breast surgery.[1][7]

Research and surgical innovation

Vidya's research centres on oncoplastic techniques and the refinement of pre-pectoral implant-based breast reconstruction, in which the implant is positioned above the pectoralis major muscle rather than beneath it.[8] Independent reviews describe pre-pectoral reconstruction as part of a broader shift toward muscle-sparing techniques aimed at reducing pain and improving aesthetic outcomes.[9][10]

She has described a muscle-sparing reconstruction approach using acellular dermal matrices (ADMs) for implant support, which she refers to as the "Flip and Flop Technique Interview on BBC Midlands news about "muscle sparing surgery" .[11](2016).

In 2019, Vidya was lead author of an international consensus guide on pre-pectoral implant-based breast reconstruction, produced with breast and plastic surgeons from the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States.[12] The guide has been cited in subsequent literature discussing patient selection and technical standardisation for pre-pectoral reconstruction.[13]

She co-developed a clinical grading system for implant rippling, a recognised complication of pre-pectoral reconstruction.[14]
