RK Struga (Macedonian: РК Струга) is a Macedonian handball club from Struga. They currently compete in the Macedonian Super League.

History

RK Struga was founded in 1948 in the city of Struga in what was then Yugoslavia.The club is one of the most respected and one the of the oldest continusly active clubs in Macedonian handball history and has played a huge role in the development of handball in the southwest part of the country.^[1]^[2]

During the first decades of the clubs existence,Struga became one of the most important clubs in the history of Macedonian handball.The clubs development was closely connected with the wider growth of handball in that region while local players increasingly became involved in competitions at the republican and later Yugoslav levels.

The growth of handball in the city also coincided with the establishment and development of the Struga Handball Tournament^[3],one of the oldest handball tournaments in the Europe.Its presence helped make the city a important destination for handball and contributed to the wider handball culture in Struga.The tournament played at the outdoor Goran Poposki-Babec court,became one of the most recognizable handball events in the region.

In 1982 RK Struga won its first league title it being the Macedonian Republic League.Following the independence of Macedonia in 1991 RK Struga became part of the newly established Macedonian handball system.The emergence of the Macedonian Handball Super League created a national top division in which the strongest clubs from the country competed. Struga became a regular participant in the Macedonian league system during the following decades, although its position within the top division varied from season to season.

The club's progress was often influenced by its limited financial resources compared with the country's largest handball institutions. Nevertheless, Struga continued to maintain a presence in senior competition and remained one of the more recognizable clubs outside the country's largest urban centres.The clubs emphasis was their younger players and academy and to this day its stil like that.During the 2010s RK Struga became a regular fixture in the Macedonian Handball Super League facing many of the country's best teams like RK Eurofarm Pelister,RK Vardar,HC Butel Skopje,RK Alkaloid and others but the most notable one was rivalry against GRK Ohrid

One of the most prominent and biggest domestic rivalries in Macedonia was the fixture against the nearby GRK Ohrid.Preffered to as the "Lake Derby" (Macedonian: Езерско Дерби) due to the proximity of the two clubs near Lake Ohrid.The matches between RK Struga and GRK Ohrid attracted considerable attendences of locals from Struga and Ohrid and it became a important part of the sporting calandar of the locals in the region.

RK Struga's Super League campaigns were generally characterized with by the combination of older more expirienced players and and locally developed talent.While the club rarely challanged for the national title,its continued presence in the top division allowed it to remain an important representative of the city in Macedonian men's handball.

In the 2020-21 season,Struga reached the play-off stage of the Macedonian Handball Super League,there they finished in the 8th position with no victories in fourteen matches,despite the difficult campaign the club still retained its Super League status.The following season, 2021–22, Struga again competed in the Super League. In the regular-season standings, the club finished eighth with six wins, one draw and fifteen defeats from twenty-two matches. The results reflected the competitive difficulties faced by clubs operating with smaller budgets, but Struga continued to compete against established Super League opponents.

2024–25 season

The 2024-25 season was one of the most difficult periods in the club's recent Super League history.In the regular season,Struga finished 11th out of 12 teams with just three wins,one draw and eight defeats from twenty-two matches,finishing with only 7 points.

The result had left Struga in a battle to avoid relegation.The season demostrated the difficulties faced by the club against bigger,deeper and financially stronger teams in the Super League.Nevertheless, the club remained active in the play-out phase and continued to fight for its place in the country's highest division. Its struggles during the season were part of a broader period in which Struga attempted to balance competitive ambitions with the financial limitations that had affected the club for several years.

2025-26 season

Struga with a hard battle in the previous season ratined its Super League status going forward to this season and entered another campaign where survival in the top division is the primary objective.During this season same as previous seasons the club faced financially stronger teams in the regular season and again ended in the play-out stage.The relegation group became particularly significant for Struga, as the club's position meant that it would have to fight for its Super League status.

By the end of the play-out phase Struga yet again finished 11th out of 12 in the Super League and that ment that Struga had earned the opportunity to defend its place in the top division through a relegation play-off.The match was scheduled against RK Mladost 1977 from Bogdanci the second placed team in the lower division.

On June 3rd 2026 Struga faced Mladost 1977 in the decisive promotion/relegation play-off,played in the capital city of Skopje in the sports hall Andon Dimitrovski.Mladost won this match 25-22 sucuring their spot in the Macedonian Handball Super League for the 2026-27 season and sending Struga to the lower division called the First League^[4].The defeat was significant because it appeared to mark the end of Struga's place in the Super League after several consecutive seasons among the country's elite. The club, however, would receive an unexpected opportunity only weeks later.

Return to the Super League through a vacant place

In July 2026 RK Prolet 62 announced that they will withdraw from the Macedonian Handball Super League for the 2026-27 season due to the financial difficulties of the club and the loss of their general sponsor.Prolet confirmed that it would instead compete in the First League, leaving a vacant position in the country's top division.^[5]

Among the most prominent developments was the return of Struga-born player Mario Tankoski, who returned to his hometown club after spending several years playing for other teams across Macedonia.His return was presented as one of the club's major moves during the summer rebuilding process.^[7]\
