Portrai is a South Korean company based in Seoul that develops artificial intelligence models, computational tools, and research software for analysing spatial biology data in oncology drug discovery. [1] [2]
History
[edit]Portrai was founded in Seoul in July 2021 by Daeseung Lee, Hongyoon Choi, Hyung-Jun Im, and Kwon Joong Na. [1] [3]
By May 2024, the company had raised a cumulative total of 6 billion won through its seed and Series A financing rounds. [1] In December 2025, Portrai announced that it had raised 14.5 billion won, approximately US$9.8 million, in a Series B financing round. [4] [5]
Technology and research
[edit]Portrai applies machine-learning methods to spatial transcriptomics, histopathology images, and other spatial biology data. Its computational tools are used to analyse tumour microenvironments and identify potential therapeutic targets and biomarkers.[1] [2]
Researchers affiliated with Portrai have presented studies at meetings of the American Association for Cancer Research. Their studies have included tumour microenvironment analysis, computational pathology, therapeutic target discovery, and modelling of antibody-drug conjugate distribution within tumour tissue. [6] [7]
In 2025, researchers affiliated with Portrai and Seoul National University Hospital published CELLama in Advanced Science. CELLama is a foundation model for analysing single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data.[8] Its software implementation was released under an open-source licence. [9]
Collaboration with Celltrion
[edit]In October 2025, Celltrion entered into a joint research and development agreement with Portrai to identify oncology drug targets using spatial transcriptomics and artificial intelligence. The collaboration uses PortraiTARGET, Portrai's computational target-discovery platform. [10] [11]
Under the agreement, Celltrion obtained exclusive rights to develop therapeutic candidates directed at up to ten targets identified through the collaboration. The potential value of the agreement, including development milestones, was reported as US$87.75 million, approximately 125.9 billion won. [10] [11]
