Peter Wilson Ward-Jackson (8 September 1915 – 3 December 2014)[1] was an English art historian, art collector and curator.[2] He also served in the Worcestershire Regiment and with MI6 during the Second World War.[3]

Biography

[edit]

Personal life

[edit]

Ward-Jackson was born in 1915 in Johannesburg to Ralph Ward-Jackson, the Yorkshire-born then editor of the Rand Daily Mail. Following his father's death in 1921, Peter moved with his family to Britain and was educated at Winchester College and Magdalene College, Cambridge reading English and modern languages.[3]

He married Joan Schellenberg in 1959, with whom he had two sons before she died in 1963. Peter remarried in 1983 to Shaunagh Fitzgerald, also an art historian as well as an art dealer.[4]

Career

[edit]

In 1940, Ward-Jackson was commissioned in the Worcestershire regiment, serving around Egypt, and recruited to MI6 in 1942. He worked briefly at an insurance company but changed course to work as an assistant keeper in the Woodwork Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum from 1948. By 1953, Ward-Jackson had moved to the Engraving, Illustration and Design department which was later renamed to Prints & Drawings in 1960. He became deputy keeper in 1963.[3]

Works

[edit]

Among Ward-Jackson's written works is Furniture Designs of the Eighteenth Century, a 1958 book covering items in the V&A's collection which remains a foremost authority on its subject.[5][6] In it he covers a number of items in the V&A's collection as well as providing an overview of the craft.[7] He also produced a number of essays on ornament in European art from 1500 to 1750, and a catalogue of Italian Drawings in the V&A collection from the 14th to 18th centuries.[2][8] The latter was praised by Byam Shaw for providing an accessible reference source to an otherwise understudied collection, and has since been used significantly as a reference work.[9]
