Oscilla A/S is a Danish manufacturer of audiometers and audiometry software, based in Aarhus. The Oscilla brand dates from 1959, when the Aarhus audiologist Egon Kjær developed the first Oscilla audiometer.[1] The product line was later owned by Inmedico A/S, GN Otometrics and Natus Medical, before the present company was registered in 2020.[1][2]

History

[edit]

Early years (1959–1992)

[edit]

The first Oscilla instrument, the DS-59 audiometer, was built in Aarhus in 1959 to a design by audiologist Egon Kjær. The early audiometers were used mainly by school nurses carrying out hearing tests in Danish schools.[1] From the 1960s to the 1980s the range grew from screening instruments to diagnostic and clinical audiometers, among them the TS3-71 (1971) and the DS 780 (1980).[1]

Inmedico, Otometrics and Natus (1992–2018)

[edit]

In 1992 Oscilla was bought by the Danish company Inmedico A/S, owned by Jens Axelgaard. Inmedico introduced the compact SM series of screening and diagnostic audiometers during the 1990s.[1]

In 2004 Inmedico released its first PC-based audiometers, the USB100 and USB300. They were connected to a computer by USB and operated through the AudioConsole software, version 2.0 of which was released at the same time. A second generation, the USB-310, USB-330 and USB-350, followed in 2009.[1] The range was extended to tympanometry with the TSM300 in 2006, the combined audiometer and tympanometer TSM500 in 2015, and the T830 and T840 tympanometers in 2017.[1]

Inmedico later became part of GN Otometrics, the hearing diagnostics business of GN Store Nord.[1][3] In September 2016 Natus Medical agreed to buy GN Otometrics for US$145 million, and the purchase was completed in January 2017.[4][5] In April 2019 Natus's chief executive said the company had exited the Oscilla product line, which it had acquired with Otometrics, at the end of 2018. He put the business at around US$10 million a year.[3]

Independent company (2020–present)

[edit]

Oscilla A/S was entered in the Danish Central Business Register on 28 October 2020. Its registered secondary names include Inmedico A/S.[2] The company is based at INCUBA Science Park in Aarhus.[6]

In 2022 the third generation of Oscilla USB audiometers, the A30, A50 and A60, was approved under the EU Medical Device Regulation (EU) 2017/745, and the AudioConsole software received CE certification.[1] Natus Sensory distributes Oscilla products as an official distribution partner.[7]

Products

[edit]

Oscilla's current audiometers are small units powered over USB and controlled from a Windows PC or tablet running the AudioConsole software.[8][9]

  • A30 – screening audiometer for air-conduction pure-tone audiometry, with manual and automatic test modes.[8]
  • A50 – diagnostic audiometer that adds bone conduction testing.[10]
  • A60 – diagnostic audiometer that adds speech audiometry.[9]
  • AudioConsole – Windows software for running audiometric tests, storing patient data and producing reports, with data exchange to other patient management systems.[11]

Regulation and quality

[edit]

The company is certified to ISO 13485. It is registered as a medical device manufacturer with the Danish Medicines Agency and in the European EUDAMED database, and its products are registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.[12]
