Okko The Exiled is an action-adventure platform game developed by Frozen Flame Interactive and published by Eastasiasoft Limited. The game was released for Windows and macOS on September 30, 2026, with console versions planned for 2027.[1]
The game is set in Kutala, a land inhabited by demons, and follows Okko, who sets out to defeat the Demon Lord Yalda and fulfill an ancient oath.[2]
Gameplay
[edit]Okko The Exiled is a 2D side-scrolling action-adventure game featuring platforming, real-time combat and exploration. Players control Okko as he travels through Kutala, fighting enemies and bosses while acquiring new abilities.[3]
The game features hand-drawn pixel-art animation, combat abilities that allow Okko to stomp, launch and deflect enemies, and a hub area known as the Old Throne. Players can also collect Deevols, which unlock additional challenge levels.[3]
Reviews have described the game as a 2D action platformer with some Metroidvania-style progression and an emphasis on exploration and secrets.[4]
Plot
[edit]The game is set in Kutala, a land of demons ruled by the Demon Lord Yalda. Okko is a young horned demon who has spent much of his life isolated from the wider world. He eventually sets out on a quest that involves defeating the rulers of Kutala and fulfilling an ancient oath.[2][5]
Development
[edit]Okko The Exiled was developed by independent studio Frozen Flame Interactive in cooperation with Eastasiasoft. Frozen Flame Interactive was founded by Matthew Strnad, who had previously developed the platform game Robozarro.[6]
The game was presented at the Tokyo Game Show in 2025 and subsequently featured a playable demo during Steam Next Fest.[6]
Release
[edit]Okko The Exiled was released digitally for Windows and macOS through Steam and GOG.com on September 30, 2026. The standard edition was priced at US$14.99, while a deluxe edition containing the digital soundtrack was priced at US$19.99.[1]
Console versions for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S are planned for early 2027.[1]
Reception
[edit]Okko The Exiled received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its pixel-art presentation, animation, combat, boss encounters and progression system. Criticism focused primarily on aspects of its controls, platforming, puzzles and level design.[7][8][9][10][11][12]
Movies, Games & Tech and GameSource both rated the game 7 out of 10. Movies, Games & Tech praised its level design, secrets and boss encounters, while criticizing aspects of its controls and traversal mechanics.[7] GameSource highlighted the combat system, progression and visual presentation, while criticizing the predictability of some enemies and aspects of the game's movement and Focus Mode.[8]
GameBlast gave the game 7.5 out of 10, praising its controls, character mobility, pixel art, boss fights and story, while finding that some mechanics were underused and that certain levels were unnecessarily prolonged.[9] Pizza Fria rated the game 6.5 out of 10, praising its visual presentation and progression while criticizing the long levels and repetitive use of the soundtrack and some platforming mechanics.[10]
Gamestic gave a cautiously positive assessment, praising the hand-drawn pixel art, animations, character designs, soundtrack and boss encounters. The review criticized the controls during tight platforming sections and described several progression puzzles as unclear. The reviewer also reported encountering softlocks that could be resolved by reloading the game.[11]
Retro News gave a strongly positive assessment, praising the game's level structure, secrets, difficulty curve, combat system, pixel art, animation and soundtrack. The review described the gameplay and presentation as excellent and considered the game a strong value for its price, recommending it to action-platformer fans.[12]
