Sofía Magalí Santillán (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 13 May, 1998), known popularly as Nimu Spacecat or just Nimu, is an Argentinian streamer and former VTuber.

She was one of the non-Japanese VTubers with the most subscribers[5][6] and the first Hispanic American VTuber to reach one million subscribers on YouTube.[7][8]

Carreer

[edit]

Her Facebook page was created on October 16, 2019, and she joined Instagram on February 14, 2020. Her Twitter account was created later in April 2020, with her first tweet posted on April 23. She began streaming on Facebook on February 13, 2020, with her first stream. In April 2021, Nimu streamed on Twitch for the first time, abandoning Facebook as her streaming platform and modifying her format to prioritize reactions, relegating gaming streams to a secondary role.[citation needed]

Avatar

[edit]

Nimu's character requires technology to come to life. Her avatar is based on a 2D model, drawn by an artist hired by the VTuber herself, and this model was then processed using the Live2D program to give it animation and movement. According to Chilean VTuber Lunaria Ayaren: “The drawing is separated into layers—a lock of hair, the pupil, the arm, the legs—everything is separated into layers and then combined in the program with the animation.”[5] Once the character is designed and animated, it comes to life again using technology. The character detects a real person's facial movements through a webcam and imitates them. It does this using the FaceRig and PrPrLive programs.[5]

In her live performances, Nimu has concealed her face in various ways. In recent performances and streams, she often uses a cardboard box shaped like a "space kitten," a helmet, or a mask that only reveals her eyes and hair. On December 20, 2024, Nimu officially revealed her face.[9]

Milestones

[edit]

In early August 2020, her YouTube channel surpassed a group of VTubers called Coloratura - Youtubers Virtuales in subscribers, and she also amassed nearly 250,000 followers on Facebook, becoming the VTuber with the most subscribers in all of Latin America. In September of that same year, Nimu became the first Spanish-speaking VTuber to enter the top 50 non-Japanese VTubers with the most subscribers.[10]

By July 2021, Nimu had reached 500,000 followers on Twitch, and by September she had reached one million followers on that platform, as well as on TikTok. By November of the same year, her YouTube channel had reached one million subscribers, making her the first Latin American VTuber to achieve this milestone.[7][10]

In May 2022, Nimu was invited to the Twitch Rivals Ultimate Challenge, held in Barcelona.[11][12]

On June 1, 2022, Nimu was invited to participate in the "Friends of Ibai vs Cupra Barca" match organized by Cupra, which was broadcast on Ibai Llanos' Twitch channel and played at Camp Nou.

In December 2022, Nimu received the silver award for "Breakthrough Streamer" at the fifth edition of the Coscu Army Awards, with Iván "Spreen" Buhajeruk in charge of the presentation.[13]
