Neringa Rūkė is a Lithuanian fashion and knitwear designer. She founded the fashion label Rūkė and later focused on hand-knitting patterns under the name Rūkė Knit.[1][2] Her knitting designs have appeared in publications by Scheepjes, Vogue Knitting and Laine Publishing.[3][4][5]

Early life and education

[edit]

Rūkė was born and raised in Vilnius. She studied clothing design at Vilnius College of Design and began working with designer Jolanta Rimkutė and at the Lithuanian Film Studio during her studies.[6] After graduating, she worked with Rimkutė and as a stylist for television and advertising.[1]

In an interview with Mamos žurnalas, she recalled knitting while at school and including sweaters in her graduation project.[7]

Career

[edit]

Rūkė fashion label

[edit]

According to a 2024 profile republished by Delfi, she learned to use a knitting machine after being unable to find the kind of sweater she wanted, and developed her first collection, Sunday.[6]

In 2012, she moved from Vilnius to a rural homestead.[6] A 2014 profile in Žmonės described the development of her knitwear business in Nemaitonys, Kaišiadorys District. It reported that a New York showroom invited her to present a collection after seeing photographs of her work. The organisers waived participation fees, and she sent a collection that subsequently generated orders from American buyers.[1]

Following further collections, including Fairy Tale, Rūkė stopped accepting garment orders and turned to hand-knitting patterns. In a 2024 interview, she said she had spent several years developing her approach to writing knitting instructions.[6]

Knitting patterns and publishing

[edit]

Scheepjes has published Rūkė's patterns in its YARN Bookazine, YARN – The After Party and Pretty Little Things series.[3][8][9] Her Spumoni cardigan appeared in the Spring/Summer 2023 issue of Vogue Knitting.[4] In 2026, Laine Publishing included her Ivory sweater in 52 Weeks of Sweaters.[5]

Design approach

[edit]

A 2015 study in Environmental Research, Engineering and Management included Rūkė among Lithuanian designers interviewed about slow fashion. It identified a connection between garments and nature, a broad design perspective and the development of one-size clothing as elements of her approach.[10]

In the profile republished by Delfi, Rūkė discussed her preference for Lithuanian wool after working with yarns from various countries.[6] KOEL Magazine profiled her creative process in The Knitting Mind, relating her work to everyday life and observation.[2]
