Nella Golanda

Nella Golanda (1941–2023) was a Greek artist whose practice encompassed sculpture, landscape design, and architecture. After beginning her studies in the late 1950s at the Athens School of Fine Arts in Athens, she merged disciplines into what she called “inhabited sculpted landscapes”. These Total Art interventions allow visitors to experience art from inside it..[1]

She received the Archisearch Lifetime Achievement Awards at ESO 2022.[2] [3] [4] She was also finalist for the Rosa Barba 1 Prize at the International Landscape Biennale of Barcelona. [5]

Design philosophy

From the 1970s, she developed a distinctive approach to sculpture informed by the Greek landscape, particularly its relationship between sky, terrain, and the sea.[6] Golanda frequently described her vision of Greece as a landscape envisioned as a series of terraces towards the sea. She worked with typical ancient and modern Greek materials, such as concrete, stone (marble) and timber.

Early Career

Starting her carrier with individual artworks about Hellenic identity,[7] she then worked more in an atypical way with the themes of reconnection to historical landscapes and with our relationship with water. [8][9] This was through geometric shapes and patterns growing out of the landscape.

Later Practice: Sculpted Architectural Landscapes

From 1995, she designed in collaboration with Aspassia Kouzoupi large-scale landscape interventions that they called 'sculpted architectural landscapes'[10]
