Nancy Savage is an American documentary and portrait photographer based in Denver, Colorado. Her work focuses on indigenous cultures and traditional communities, particularly portraiture, ceremonies, cultural identity and everyday life. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally and published in photography books and editorial publications.

Early life and career

Savage was born and raised in Denver. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Denver in 1978 and later studied interior design, graduating from the Interior Design Institute in 1982. She began her professional career with Victor Huff & Associates before founding Inside Lines Ltd., an interior design firm she owned and operated for more than two decades.

Photography career

Savage began pursuing photography in the early 2000s while traveling internationally. A 2012 trip to Peru became an important point in her transition from interior design to photography. Her work subsequently developed into a focus on documentary portraiture, with an emphasis on indigenous cultures, traditional communities and everyday life.

Her photography has taken her to communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America. She has photographed in Ethiopia's OMO Valley, Peru, India, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Nepal, Cuba and other regions, documenting cultural traditions, ceremonies, labor and daily life. Her approach often involves spending extended periods within communities and photographing people in their own environments.

Selected projects

Savage has photographed communities in Ethiopia's OMO Valley on two separate visits, in 2019 and 2023. Her work there has included the Suri, Hamar, Mursi, Daasanach, Arbore, Karo and Bodi communities, documenting ceremonies, traditional adornment and daily life.

In Bangladesh, she photographed workers in Dhaka, Narayanganj and Brahmanbaria, including coal and brick porters and workers in shipyards. In Mongolia, she photographed the Dukha, also known as the Tsaatan, a reindeer-herding community in northern Mongolia.

Her work in India has included photography in Gujarat and Kutch, as well as Varanasi and the Dharavi slum in Mumbai. In Peru, she returned in 2025 to photograph communities in the highlands, including Q'ero, Willoq, Chinchero and Paucartambo.

Exhibitions

Savage's photographs have been exhibited in the United States and internationally. Her work was included in the African Photo Festival in New York City in 2019 Her work was also included in a Photowalk Global collaboration exhibition at Blindwell Gallery in the United Kingdom in 2019. She also presented a large exhibition of her photography at Modern Nomad in Denver in 2019.

Savage's work has been selected for seven Atlas of Humanity exhibitions in Paris, Milan, and New York City between 2022 and 2026. In October 2021, her photography was included in the First International Exhibition for Portrait organized by the Iraqi Photographers

Awards and recognition

In 2023, Savage received a Gold award at the Budapest International Foto Awards (BIFA)for her photograph The Watering Hole. Savage received a Bronze award at the Budapest International Foto Awards (BIFA) in 2024 in the Special/Night Photography category. In 2025, she received an Honorable Mention from BIFA for her portrait photography.

In 2021, Savage won first place in the Bold Color category of the Click Photo Contest for her photograph Feeling Blue.

Publications and media

Savage's photography has appeared in books and photography publications. Her work was featured in the book Head Adornments, Jewelry and Ethnic Tattoos and in "The Story of Faces"and in "Atlas of Humanity: Exploring Cultural Diversity". In 2021, Savage's photography was published in Issue 18 of Shades of Color, where she was named on the issue's cover.

Savage has been the subject of interviews and profiles about her photography, including features in ArtStyleFlow, Eat My News, Hello Icon, Shoutout Colorado, VoyageDenver and Bold Journey.
