The Motley Coffeehouse, often referred to as the Motley, is a student-run coffeehouse at Scripps College, a private liberal arts women's college in Claremont, California. It serves as a center for social life at the school and aims to operate in a feminist and socially responsible manner.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

The Motley Coffeehouse was founded in 1974, fulfilling a need for Scripps to have a central gathering place that had not previously been met.[8] It was originally housed in Balch Hall, but later moved to the basement of what is today Mallott Commons, becoming known as the Motley Underground.[8] In 2009, it moved again to Seal Court.[8]

The Motley closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, reopening in March 2022.[9]

Facility

The Motley is located off of Seal Courtyard, near the center of Scripps' campus. It has both indoor and outdoor seating, with the indoor seating in a brick-walled room adorned with various artworks.[10]

Operations

The Motley's employees have come into conflict with the college's administration on several occasions, including in the fall 2024 semester over the display of a Palestinian flag in the coffeehouse.[11][12] The administration shut down the coffeehouse for two months over the conflict.[13][14][15][16]

The Motley encourages students to bring their own mugs, and charges an extra dollar for disposable cups.[citation needed]
