Mohit Tyagi (born 3 December 1979), popularly known as MT Sir, is an Indian educator and YouTuber known for teaching Mathematics for the IIT-JEE examination. He is the founder of the edtech platform Competishun, and is known for making free lectures in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics available to students on YouTube.[1][2] His life inspired the SonyLIV web series 13th, released in October 2025.[1][3]

Early life and education

Tyagi was born on 3 December 1979 in Etah, a town in Uttar Pradesh, India.[4] He studied mechanical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, earning a Bachelor of Technology degree.[citation needed]

Career

Early in his career, Tyagi taught for around a decade in Kota.[4] In 2013, he started an educational YouTube channel offering free IIT-JEE preparation to students who could not afford coaching.[4][1] His channel hosts full-syllabus lectures for JEE Main and JEE Advanced in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; as of 2025 it had more than 2.2 million subscribers, and his free content has been reported to have reached over 20 lakh students.[1]

Tyagi is the founder of Competishun, an online coaching platform for the IIT-JEE and NEET examinations.[2] In 2024, the platform reported that a number of its students secured ranks in the JEE Advanced examination.[5]

The SonyLIV series 13th, released on 1 October 2025, is inspired by the life of Tyagi.[3][1] The title refers to the "drop year" after Class 12, when students prepare for the IIT-JEE.[6] In the series, the character based on Tyagi is played by actor Gagan Dev Riar, known for Scam 2003.[1][7]
