Mohammad Shariful Islam is a Bangladeshi civil engineer and academic serving as the fourth Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), a post he has held since 25 July 2026.[1][2] A professor in BUET's Department of Civil Engineering, he is known for his research on vetiver-grass-based bioengineering for slope protection and disaster-resilient infrastructure, work that has drawn sustained national and international attention over more than a decade.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Islam was born in Kotbari, Cumilla.[2] He completed his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at BUET in 1997 and joined the same department as a lecturer that year.[4][5] He earned a Ph.D. from Saitama University, Japan, in 2002, and went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship there.[4]
Academic career
[edit]Islam was promoted to full professor at BUET in 2013.[4][2] He now teaches in the Department of Civil Engineering while directing BUET's Research and Innovation Centre for Science and Engineering (RISE).[4] His published research has been cited over 2,300 times, according to his Google Scholar profile.[6]
Vetiver-based bioengineering research
[edit]Islam has researched the use of vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) for slope stabilization and erosion control in Bangladesh for over a decade.[3] In 2018, he provided technical assistance to the Chittagong City Corporation for a vetiver grass demonstration project on hill slopes in Chattogram, part of a joint Bangladesh–Thailand initiative supported by Thailand's Chaipattana Foundation; the project's centre was inaugurated by Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.[3][7]
In 2023, Islam received the Vetiver Champion Award from The Vetiver Network International at its 7th International Conference on Vetiver, in recognition of his work promoting vetiver grass technology.[8]
In August 2026, Islam presented his research on vetiver grass as a sustainable alternative to concrete for erosion control to the Prime Minister's office, highlighting its use in protecting riverbanks, canal embankments, coastal dykes, and roads.[9]
Pro-Vice-Chancellorship
[edit]On 22 July 2026, the Ministry of Education of Bangladesh issued a notification appointing Islam as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of BUET, succeeding Professor Abdul Hasib Chowdhury.[1][5][4] He is the fourth person to hold the office.[4][5] Under the terms of his appointment, he serves for four years from the date he assumes office, or until retirement, whichever comes first.[4] He assumed the position on 25 July 2026.[10]
