Draft:Michael Just

  • Comment: Thank you for the comment. I accept that criterion 4 is not met, as it requires several collections. The submission rests instead on NARTIST criterion 3 and on general notability: the work has been the subject of independent published reviews and criticism over an extended period — Magdalena Kröner in Kunstforum International (2008), Peter Funken in Lido (2008), Alena Sokhan in Berlin Art Link (2014), Jennifer Smart in Arts and Culture Texas on the 2015 solo exhibition at Cydonia, a chapter by Laurence A. Rickels discussing specific works in Der integrierte Vampir (Passagen Verlag, 2017), and coverage of a commissioned installation in Der Tagesspiegel (2016). For clarity on the collection itself: the Musée régional d'art contemporain Occitanie is a public regional museum operated by the Occitanie region, founded in 1991, with some 3,200 m² of exhibition space and a permanent collection of around 450 works; it has an article on the French Wikipedia (fr:Musée régional d'Art contemporain Occitanie). I would be grateful if the draft could be assessed against criterion 3. Tsujm (talk) 15:58, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment: WP:NARTIST criteria says "The person's work (or works) has been represented within the permanent collections of several notable galleries or museums. There is only one collection mentioned here and it is not notable. Theroadislong (talk) 15:31, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment: This draft has been substantially rewritten since the December 2023 declines. Promotional language has been removed, lists reduced to selections, all statements now carry inline citations, self-published sources (including the subject's own website and YouTube) have been removed entirely, and the collection claim is limited to the ones documented by an independent institutional source. I am the subject of the article and have disclosed my conflict of interest on my user page and this draft's talk page. Tsujm (talk) 13:02, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment: notability will hinge on the notable collections he is in and so far they are entirely unsourced. Theroadislong (talk) 12:20, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Comment: We do not use MFA email conversations as reliable sources, especially when they link to commercial book seller sites. Also we don't use YouTube as a reliable source. See WP:RS. Netherzone (talk) 00:55, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Comment: This is written like a resume or CV, with a tone that is more promotional than encyclopedic. Netherzone (talk) 15:16, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Michael Just (born 1979 in Frankfurt am Main) is a German artist based in Berlin.[1] His work comprises sculpture, installation, text and print-based works, and time-based media.[2][3][4]

Education and career

[edit]

Just studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 2000 to 2007, completing his diploma as a Meisterschüler of Daniel Buren.[1] He received an MFA in Art Practice from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2009.[1][5] From 2010 to 2011 he took part in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program in New York City.[1][6] In 2026 Just received a PhD from the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong.[7]. Since 2026 he is Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Bilkent University, Ankara.[8]

Work

[edit]

Reviewing his work in 2008, the critic Peter Funken described the relationship between architectural and sculptural form as a central interest of the artist.[2] The 2006 work Götz is held in the collection of the Musée régional d'art contemporain Occitanie, Sérignan, where it is catalogued as a painting on aluminium.[4][9]. Writing in Kunstforum International, Magdalena Kröner characterized his spatial interventions as at once minimalist and narrative.[10]

In a review for a 2014 exhibition at Eigen+Art Lab, Berlin, Alena Sokhan noted the range of Just's output, from photographic prints to text works and sculptural pieces.[3] The theorist Laurence A. Rickels has discussed Just's use of found photographs in works based on images of the Beach Boys and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He interprets their transformation as involving the loss and recovery of icons of mass identification. In doing so, he relates Just's treatment of these images to Walter Benjamin's account of allegory.[11] Reviewing Just's 2015 exhibition at Cydonia, Dallas, Jennifer Smart described the question of how history can be re-made, re-interpreted and re-experienced as a recurring concern of his work.[12]

A catalog published for the 2023 exhibition Vestiges du futur at the museum Narbo Via describes Just's practice as comprising installations, texts and projects at the intersections of art, architecture, urbanism and design.[9]
