He has worked in journalism and communications in the Twin Cities and has written and presented about Bob Dylan, particularly Dylan's connections to Minnesota. Career

[edit]

Steichen has worked in journalism and communications in the Twin Cities since 2006.[1]

His journalism has included reporting and photography for Minnesota newspapers, including the Star Tribune. In January 2018, the Star Tribune published Steichen's feature about Echo Helstrom Casey, a Hibbing native who dated Dylan during their high-school years and has been associated with the inspiration for Dylan's song "Girl from the North Country".[2]

Steichen has also written about Minnesota high-school sports and other local subjects.

Bob Dylan

[edit]

Steichen has focused much of his writing, podcasting, public speaking and media work on Bob Dylan's life and music.

Steichen's Dylan-related work has particularly examined Dylan's Minnesota connections, including his childhood in Duluth and Hibbing and his association with Dinkytown in Minneapolis.[1] Stories about his family's connection to Dylan have appeared in the St. Paul Pioneer Press[3], Sioux City Journal[4] and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.[5]

Bob Dylan in Minnesota

[edit]

Steichen was one of the Minnesota contributors to Bob Dylan in Minnesota: Troubadour Tales from Duluth, Hibbing and Dinkytown, published in 2023. The book was written by K. G. Miles with contributions from Steichen, Paul Metsa, Ed Newman and Marc Percansky. It examines Dylan's Minnesota childhood and musical career.[6]

Public speaking

[edit]

Steichen has presented lectures on Dylan's life, music, influence and fan community. In 2023, he presented the John Bushey Memorial Lecture at Duluth Dylan Fest titled "Bob Dylan and his Fans: Searching for Love and Inspiration".[7]

An account of the 2023 Duluth Dylan Fest described Steichen's presentation as an examination of Dylan's significance as experienced by his fans and discussed Minnesota's influence on Dylan's development.[8]

Steichen has also presented about Dylan at the Macalester College Dylan Summit[9] [1], to the American Center in Moscow [10] and spoken about Dylan on TRT World television in Turkey[11].

In 2024, Steichen participated in another Duluth Dylan Fest John Bushey Memorial Lecture with Paul Metsa, Ed Newman, and Marc Percansky, the other Minnesota contributors to Bob Dylan in Minnesota.[12]

The Bobcats, A Bob Dylan Fan Podcast

[edit]

From 2021 to 2022, Steichen hosted The Bobcats, A Bob Dylan Fan Podcast. The podcast focused on Dylan's music and the community of fans surrounding his work. The podcast produced 16 episodes and included interviews with writers, musicians, researchers, and longtime Dylan fans. Guests included Sean Latham, a Dylan scholar and founding director of the Institute for Bob Dylan Studies at the University of Tulsa.[13]

Steichen was also a frequent guest on Bob Dylan podcast Pod Dylan[14] and provides Dylan news updates on the Stars over the Prairie[15] radio show in Duluth, Minnesota. In 2023, he appeared on the Talk North My First Concert[16] podcast with Dave Lee.
