Comment: Not including references within the awards section, every source is a primary source and the content derived from those sources likely constitute as original research or greatly overstate Basler's roles in these projects. ✶Quxyz✶ (talk) 23:49, 12 June 2026 (UTC)

Marek Basler (born 1978 in Opava, Czech Republic) is a Czech Microbiologist and Professor of Infection Biology at the Biozentrum University of Basel, Switzerland.
Biography
[edit]Marek Basler studied biochemistry and microbiology at the Institute of Microbiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, Czech Republic, and earned his PhD in 2007.[1] Subsequently, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Prof. John Mekalanos at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. Since 2013, Basler has been teaching and leading a research group at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel, first as an Assistant Professor and since 2026 as a Full Professor of Infection Biology.
Scientific Career
[edit]Marek Basler investigates a bacterial injection apparatus involved in infectious diseases as well as in shaping bacterial communities. The so-called type VI secretion system (T6SS) works like a speargun and is used by many bacteria, including pathogens, to inject a cocktail of toxins into cells.[2]
In recent years, Basler has elucidated key aspects of T6SS function, molecular architecture, and assembly, as well as its widespread use across diverse bacterial species.[3] He showed that certain bacteria localize T6SS assembly to contact sites with neighboring bacteria[4] and that the intracellular pathogen Burkholderia thailandensis uses this nanomachine to spread within the host.[5] Atomic force microscopy studies further revealed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa assembles its T6SS in response to outer membrane damage.[6][7]More recently, he identified a trade-off: activation of a general defense program against T6SS attacks increases the bacterium’s sensitivity to antibiotics.[8][9]
