Draft:Liu HanYuan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liu Hanyuan (Chinese: 刘汉元; born December 1964) is a Chinese billionaire-businessman and is the founder and chairman of Tongwei Group.[1] He is the National People's Congress deputy and vice chairman of All-China Federation of Industry & Commerce.[2]

As of 2026, Liu has a net worth of US$5.9 billion.[1]

Early Life

[edit]

Liu was born in December 1964 to a peasant family background in Meishan, Sichuan.[3] He trained at Sichuan Fisheries School where he graduated in 1981, and worked as a technician in a state-run reservoir fishery.[3] At age 19, he started an experimental fish cage initiative, where he developed the "flowing-water cage culture" technique, where he built mesh/metal cages and anchored them in a moving water source.[4] At the time, aquaculture technology in China was limited to raising fish in an open pond, which limited yield based on the available oxygen and food in the water. Liu's development resulted in record yields, and his technique was later promoted nationwide by China's agriculture ministry.[3] His success helped him realize that technique would require specialized feed, which inspired his founding of Sichuan Tongwei Feed Co., Ltd.[4]

Founding of Tongwei

[edit]

In 1992, Liu founded the company Sichuan Tongwei Feed Co., Ltd., which is the predecessor company of Tongwei Group.[3][1] Under Liu's leadership, the company grew into China's largest producer of aquaculture feed.[3] The company went public on the Shanghai Stock exchange in 2004.[3]

Diversification into solar energy

[edit]

Starting in 2006, Liu led the company to diversify into high-purity polysilicon production for the solar industry.[3]

Tongwei was a latecomer to the PV industry in China. Liu led the company through a strategy that combined his expertise in aquatic fishing with solar energy. PV power stations were placed over aquaculture ponds to generate electricity while farmers harvested at lower costs with higher efficiency.[5]

In 2013, Tongwei acquired LDK Solar Hi-Tech (Hefei) Co, a solar cell and module manufacturing unit from LDK Solar Co.[6][7] The acquisition meant Tongwei could now manufacture solar cells and modules using its own polysilicon.[8]

In 2019, Liu stepped down from operational leadership roles at the listed subsidiary Tongwei Co., Ltd., while remaining chairman and controlling shareholder of the unlisted parent, Tongwei Group.[9]

Honors

[edit]

In October 2018, Liu was named one of the "100 Outstanding Private Entrepreneurs of the 40 Years of Reform and Opening-up" (改革开放40年百名杰出民营企业家), an honor jointly conferred by central Chinese government and party bodies to mark the fortieth anniversary of China's reform era.[10]

Personal life

[edit]

Liu is married to Guan Yamei; they have one daughter, Liu Shuqi (born 1989), who has served as chairwoman and chief executive of Tongwei Co., Ltd. since 2023.[1][9]

Philanthropy

[edit]

In 2007, Liu established the "Siyuan–Sunshine Plan" with an initial donation of ¥50 million (around US$6.6 million at the time) to fund poverty-alleviation projects built around small-scale solar power, including installations in Sichuan's Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture and in Xinjiang.[11]
