Lankaran River is a river in Azerbaijan between Lerik and Lankaran and empties into Caspian Sea.[1]
Its length is 81 km, and its drainage area is 1,080 km². It originates on the eastern slope of the Gömür-Göydağ (2,493 m) source of the Talysh Mountains range. In its middle and upper courses, it is called Veziru, Dubur, Lerikchay, and after the confluence with the Basharuchay tributary, it is named Lankaranchay. Its main tributaries are the Kanjabaru (length 44 km) from the right, and the Verichay (length 16–17 km), Basharyu (38 km long), and on the left, the Alasha (16 km long). The river's length is 81 km.[2]
Its flow is formed mainly from rain (70%), partially from groundwater (20%), and snowmelt (10%). The average annual flow is 13.0 cubic meters per second. Of this, 45% occurs in the fall, 30% in the spring, 4% in the summer, and 21% in the winter. During the period of intensive snowmelt (July-August), 5-7% of the annual flow occurs. On average, it carries up to 120,000 tons of silt to the Caspian Sea per year. Its water is mineralized as Sodium chloride, with a mineralization level of 500–1000 mg/L. Its right tributaries flow to the northeast, while its main channel flows to the southeast. All tributaries cross the Pashtasar Range at a right angle. The main channel also crosses the Burovar Range. The river's annual flow is 8.07 m³/s near the village of Sifidor and 12 m³/s near the city of Lankaran.[3]
The water of the Lankaran River is used for irrigation and the water supply of the city of Lankaran.
