LFTools (also styled LF Tools) is an open-source plugin for the QGIS geographic information system developed by Brazilian cartographic engineer Leandro França. Released in 2021, the plugin provides tools for cartographic production, surveying, drone mapping, GNSS data processing, geospatial database management, digital image processing, and spatial analysis.[1]

The software is written in Python and distributed through the official QGIS plugin repository. By September 2026, the repository recorded more than 400,000 downloads of the plugin.[1]

History and development

[edit]

LFTools was first released through the official QGIS plugin repository on 12 March 2021.[1]

In 2021, LFTools was used with the TopoGeo data model in research presented at the XXII Brazilian Symposium on Geoinformatics. The study described the use of the plugin for the automated production of cadastral surveying documents.[2]

In December 2024, LFTools was presented at the international FOSS4G conference in Belém, Brazil, in a session titled Plugin LFTools – A "Made in Brazil" Geospatial Solution!. The presentation covered applications of the software in surveying, land administration, engineering, and environmental studies.[3]

Applications

[edit]

LFTools has been utilized as a methodological tool in scientific research across several disciplines, including photogrammetry, remote sensing, agriculture, GNSS surveying, cartography, and geomorphology.

A 2024 study published in Applied Sciences used LFTools to correct the georeferencing of UAV-derived orthomosaics in agroforestry systems in the Brazilian Caatinga. Ground control points were processed in QGIS before vegetation indices and forage production parameters were analyzed.[4]

Another 2024 study, published in Agriculture, employed the plugin to correct georeferencing discrepancies in UAV orthomosaics used to estimate biophysical parameters of forage cactus from RGB imagery and machine-learning techniques.[5]

In 2025, a study published in Cuadernos Geográficos utilized LFTools to correct coordinates obtained from GNSS-RTK surveying during the spatial mapping of a riverside community in the Brazilian Amazon.[6]

A 2025 study in Observatório de la Economía Latinoamericana applied LFTools in an analysis of river-channel width based on lidar data and CBERS satellite imagery, using its capabilities for elevation-profile operations and channel geometry construction.[7]

In 2026, a paper published in the ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences detailed the mathematical modelling and computational validation of confidence ellipses implemented directly within LFTools.[8]

Institutional and educational use

[edit]

The QGIS 2025 Manual published by the Instituto Água e Terra of Paraná includes instructions for installing LFTools and uses its Azimuth and Distance tool in technical procedures for reconstructing land property descriptions.[9]

Educational training material published by the Civil Defense authority of Espírito Santo also incorporates LFTools in QGIS procedures for importing geotagged field photographs and generating KML files with embedded images.[10]

Recognition

[edit]

In July 2026, LFTools received the Bronze Award at CATCON 9 (Computer Assisted Teaching Contest), held during the XXV Congress of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) in Toronto, Canada.[11] The software was entered in the competition as LFTools: An Open-Source Educational Geospatial Toolkit for Computer Assisted Teaching in Surveying and Geomatics using the QGIS Platform.[11]

The international recognition and the project's development were reported in independent coverage by the geospatial trade publication MundoGEO,[12] as well as in institutional news coverage by the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE).[13]
