Kim Thi Le (Vietnamese: Lê Thị Kim), professionally known as Kim Uyên, is a Vietnamese Canadian musician, composer, educator, and community leader. She is known for her work as a performer and composer for the Đàn Tranh, a traditional Vietnamese zither, and for her contributions to the preservation and promotion of Vietnamese traditional music internationally.
Early life and education
[edit]Kim Uyên studied Đàn Tranh at the Vietnamese Conservatory of Music, where she graduated as valedictorian. In 1984, she received a National Gold Medal for Excellence in Đàn Tranh Performance.[1]
She later earned a Master of Arts degree in Ethnomusicology from Monash University in Australia through a women's scholarship program.[2]
Music career
[edit]Kim Uyên has performed traditional and contemporary Vietnamese music throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, Canada, and the United States.
In September 1990, she was featured in The Age (Melbourne, Australia), which described her performance of traditional Vietnamese music on the Đàn Tranhduring a multicultural arts festival.[3]
In 1991, she was profiled in Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes in an article discussing Vietnamese traditional music and the cultural significance of the Đàn Tranh.[4]
Additional coverage in Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes documented her performances during events commemorating the Vietnamese centenary in New Caledonia.[5]
Kim Uyên has appeared on radio and television programs and has released recordings featuring Vietnamese traditional music. She has also composed original works for the Đàn Tranh and published educational materials related to Vietnamese traditional music.
She has been associated with Vietnamese traditional music ensembles including Phượng Ca, Tiếng Hát Quê Hương, Thiếu Nhi Lê Văn Khoa, Back to Back Zithers, and Hồng Lạc.
White House performance
[edit]In 2018, Kim Uyên participated in a Lunar New Year cultural presentation at the White House in Washington, D.C., as a teacher consultant of the Hướng Việt Traditional Music Ensemble. Contemporary newspaper coverage identified her as one of the participating artists and noted performances of her composition Vui Mùa Lúa.[6]
Coverage of the White House performance also appeared in Vietnamese-language media in the United States.[7][8][9]
Video game work
[edit]In 2018, Kim Uyên collaborated with composers Wade MacNeil and Andrew Gordon Macpherson on the soundtrack for Far Cry 5: Hours of Darkness, a downloadable content expansion for the video game Far Cry 5 published by Ubisoft.[10]
According to the composers, Kim Uyên collaborated on the soundtrack's Vietnamese instrumentation and her performance on the Đàn Tranh became a defining element of the musical identity of the Hours of Darkness score.[11]
Community work
[edit]Kim Uyên serves as Director of the Vietnamese Community Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. Through her work with the centre, she has supported immigrant settlement services, language-training programs, and cultural initiatives for newcomers to Canada.
She is the founder of the Vietnamese Traditional Music Festival, an international event dedicated to the promotion of Vietnamese traditional music and culture. She has also served as an advisor to performing arts groups in North America and Europe.
