KAAN Architecten is a Dutch architectural firm based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with 2 additional offices in São Paulo (2015) and Paris (2019).[1] The practice was established in 2014 by architects Kees Kaan, Dikkie Scipio and Vincent Panhuysen following the dissolution of Claus en Kaan Architecten, which had been founded by Kees Kaan and Felix Claus in 1988.[2] The firm's design approach emphasizes architectural narrative, representation as a design tool, and the role of the architect as a communicator in addressing the complexity of the design process.[3]
In 2025, KAAN Architecten announced the appointment of associate partners Renata Gilio, Marco Lanna, Antony Laurijsen, and Hrvoje Smidihen.[4]
Academia
[edit]The firm maintains close links with architectural academia through research and education. Since 2006 Kees Kaan has been professor of Architectural Design (Chair of Materialization) at Delft University of Technology and initiator of the Complex Projects Chair from 2012. From 2019 to 2025 Kaan was appointed Chairman of the Architecture Department.[5] Since 2019, Dikkie Scipio has held the Chair of Architectural Design at the Münster University of Applied Sciences in Germany.[6]
